Refunds for Overpayment

Do I receive a refund if I've overpaid, dropped a course or had a course canceled?

  • Refund payments are not immediate. Allow approximately six weeks for processing and mailing during the fall/spring semesters and four weeks during the summer/winter sessions.
  • Credit courses eight weeks or less in length are subject to a refund schedule appropriate to the length of the course.
  • A course canceled by the college will be refunded all tuition and fees relative to the cancelled course.
  • If you have any questions about a refund resulting from overpayment, please contact us at:
    • e-mail: studentaccounts@sunyorange.edu
    • phone: (845) 341-4829
    • Please note: we are prevented from discussing private account information unless a student sets up PROXY ACCESS for discussion via e-mail or phone.

Important information regarding your financial aid:

When will I receive my financial aid refund?

Financial aid is disbursed to student accounts periodically through out the semester. Once enough financial aid has been disbursed to your account so that current semester charges are paid in full, if you have a credit balance remaining, a refund will be issued within 14 days.

How do I know when my financial aid has been disbursed?

You can monitor your student account online:

  1. Log into your MySUNYOrange account.
  2. Select the "Banner"icon at the top right.
  3. Select the "Financial Aid" tab at the top.
  4. Select "Award"
  5. Select "Award Payment Schedule" and choose the current aid year.

In this screen, you can see all financial aid that has been finalized for the current aid year and the expected amount. The "expected payment date" is the date your aid is scheduled to disburse to your account. The amount "paid to date" represents aid that has already been disbursed to your account.

Please note:

  • TAP is not disbursed until certified by the state of NY, so the "expected payment date" cannot be pre-determined.
  • If the "expected payment date" has passed, and the amount "paid to date" is $0, please contact the Financial Aid Office to find out why your aid has not been paid.

If I drop a class, how does that affect my financial aid?

If you decide to drop a class during the semester, your financial aid could change. Many factors determine if and how your financial aid will change by dropping a course (enrollment status, date, type of aid, etc.).

Financial Aid impacts of dropping one or more courses for the semester: Fall 2021.

Dropping a course between August 23rd and September 12th , 2021:

Will Course Qualify For Aid? Federal Aid (PELL grant, Stafford, Unsubsidized & PLUS loans) NO

State Aid (TAP grant) YES

Dropping a course on or after September 13th, 2021:

Will Course Qualify For Aid? Federal Aid (PELL grant, Stafford, Unsubsidized & PLUS loans) YES

State Aid (TAP grant) YES

Important:

  • Course being dropped must have been financial aid eligible (applicable to your degree major).
  • Students with Federal Loans must be enrolled in 6 credits at the time the loan is disbursed
  • Students must attend a course (per instructor confirmation) in order for a course to qualify for aid.

If you have specific questions about how this will impact your current or future financial aid eligibility, please e-mail william.potter@sunyorange.edu, and include your SUNY Orange ID number, or visit the Financial Aid office.

What happens to my financial aid if I withdraw from SUNY Orange?

If you have to completely withdraw from all of your courses in any semester, your financial aid may be recalculated. The federal government states that any student who withdraws prior to completing 60% of the semester, will have their financial aid recalculated. Recalculation means that SUNY Orange may be required to return a portion of your federal grant and loan funds to federal programs, and in turn, you may owe a balance to SUNY Orange.

60% date of the Fall 2022 semester: November 11, 2022

60% date of the Spring 2023 semester: March 29, 2023

A student who completely withdraws on or after the date shown above, will not have their financial aid recalculated.

If you completely withdraw, and your financial aid is recalculated, you may have a balance due to SUNY Orange. If you are considering completely withdrawing from the semester for any reason, please contact Bill Potter at william.potter@sunyorange.edu or finaid@sunyorange.edu to discuss your options and possible implications.

Am I due a financial aid refund?

Once your aid shows as "paid to date", you can monitor your student account to see if you are due a refund:

  1. Log into your MySUNYOrange account.
  2. Select the "Banner"icon at the top right.
  3. Select the "Student" tab at the top.
  4. Select "Student Account"
  5. Select "Account Detail by Term"

This screen will show your billing history at SUNY Orange. The most current semester is at top. If the "Detail Account Balance" shows a negative balance, you are due a refund. A refund should be issued within 14 days.

Use this screen also to monitor when the refund is posted to your account. Your refund will show as a line item within the current semester in the "charge" column.

When will my financial aid be disbursed?

The first disbursement of financial aid occurs approximately two weeks after the Census Date each semester, and then daily thereafter.
