Accreditation

The Occupational Therapy Assistant Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) located at:

The OTA program received a 10 year reaccreditation in 2004. The program is scheduled to be reaccrediated in 2013/2014.

Certification

Graduates of the OTA Program are eligible to receive New York State certification from the State Education Department and to sit for the certification examination administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy:

Upon successful completion of the exam, the graduate receives national certification and may use the letters "COTA".

NOTE: Graduates of the OTA program are required to apply for NBCOT certification. Candidates applying for the Certification Examination must notify the NBCOT's Qualifications Review Committee (QRC) if they have ever been charged with or convicted of a felony. A felony conviction may prevent the candidate from taking the examination. Please consult the department chair if this may be an issue in successfully pursuing a career in occupational therapy.

Outcome Data

All data is from August 2005 to May 2007:

Total number of program graduates = 55

NBCOT first time test takers = 47

NBCOT first time test takers that passed = 44

NBCOT first time test takers pass rate = 94%

Employment of graduates as OTAs = 100%

Retention rate in the OTA program = 70% (calculated by dividing number of students who left the program prior to graduation in that year divided by total head count of students enrolled in the program during that year).
