SUNY Orange Community Orchestra Announces 17th Annual Concerto/Aria Contest

The SUNY Orange Community Orchestra is pleased to announce its 17th Annual Concerto/Aria Contest. This is an opportunity for the best young musicians in the local area to exhibit their talents.

The deadline to apply for the contest is Friday, December 7th, 2018.

Auditions will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the William and Helen Richards Theatre at Orange Hall on the Middletown campus of SUNY Orange. The audition snow date will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 19. The performance will be held on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. in the Paramount Theater, also in Middletown. 

Further application details are as follows: 

  • Applicants must be residents of Orange County (NY), or attend school or college in Orange County (NY), and must be no older than age 23 as of January 1, 2019.

  • The audition piece should be roughly 10-20 minutes in duration.

  • Music must have a published and available orchestral accompaniment to be acceptable.  Any music composed after 1900 needs prior approval by the conductor, Richard Simons.

  • Depending upon details of the selected repertoire, a partial or complete instrumental concerto, and/or multiple vocal arias may be included in the orchestral performance.

  • All applicants must audition with a piano accompanist, and appear in person.  Videos of performances are not acceptable. Accompanists are the responsibility of the applicant.
