Smile: Cleft Lip ~ Cleft Palate

Dates: 03/15/2018 (Thu): 6:00 pm
Category: Campus Events
Description:

The face is crucial for human identity, and damage such as scarring or developmental deformities have effects stretching beyond those of solely physical inconvenience [Moore, Keith L.; Dalley, Arthur F.; Agur, Anne M. R. (2010). Moore's Clinical Anatomy]. One of the most common birth defects worldwide is cleft lip which is an opening in the upper lip. Not only can this and its often accompanying cleft palate cause difficulties in speaking, eating, drinking, hearing, and all around dental health, clefts create a defigured face.

On Thursday, March 15 a film screening followed by a discussion will begin at 6pm in the Gilman Center, Library Room 130 at SUNY Orange. The event, Smile: Cleft Lip ~ Cleft Palate will feature a screening of Operation Smile film plus an explanation of these birth defects, what can be done, and also a life story by a man who has lived with and had successful surgeries.

Operation Smile is one of several organizations that go into developing countries with doctors, dentists, and nurses to perform procedures to fix clefts. The surgeries have life-changing effects on those who receive them and their families who would not be able to afford the medical procedures otherwise.  In some cultures, children with clefts are ostracized and cannot go to school. Even in the United States, bullying is common.

Come and learn and share in this evening program on the physical and psychological effects of cleft lips and palates. The event, which is free and open to the public, is presented in cooperation with the SUNY Orange Dental Hygiene Department.

The Gilman Center is located in the Library at the corner of South Street and East Conkling Avenue, Middletown (GPS: near 115 South St). Questions may be directed to  (845) 341-4891 and cultural@sunyorange.edu, website: www.sunyorange.edu/culturalaffairs.
