Accenting the Personal in Charcoal Drawing

Dates: 03/08/2018 (Thu): 4:00 pm- 6:00 pm
Category: Campus Events
Description:

Ward Lamb chose visual art as a career because to him it parallels his love of music. Keeping that in mind, during the upcoming program, Accenting the Personal ~ a Charcoal Drawing Master Class in Portraiture, classical music will play in the background to create ambience and enhance the mood for drawing. Indeed, this hands-on art workshop, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2018 from 4 to 6pm in Orange Hall Gallery.

Using a character model, participants will use vine charcoal and charcoal pencil to lay in gestural form of head and posture to empathize and interpret the model at hand. Part one of the session will emphasize different ways to combine form and line, emphasizing the posture and nature of the subject. This will be done in a series of shorter sketches focusing on gesture and proportions.

Part two will consist of two poses of longer duration, integrating areas of tone and line to describe the expression of the unique sitter. Time will be allotted at the end for quick review and feedback.

Various levels of experience are fine. However, participants should be no younger than 15 years old.  If attendees have charcoal pencils/ebony pencils, they should bring them although materials for class participation will be supplied. No registration is required. Attendees will be able to take home their piece of artwork.

Lamb holds a BFA from SUNY Stony Brook and an MFA from Brooklyn College. In addition, he studied at Maine College of Art (MECA) and attended The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture.  He taught on a Fulbright Scholarship in the UK and worked at Minisink Valley High School retiring as longtime chair of its art department. He loves to paint and draw.
