The String's the Thing!! master class

Dates: 10/20/2017 (Fri): 11:00 am- 12:30 pm
Category: Campus Events
Description:

"The String's the Thing," a master class by the String Trio of New York (James Emery, guitarist; Rob Thomas, violinist; Tony Marino, bassist) will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20 in Orange Hall Room 23.

This event is free and open to the general public.

Master classes at SUNY Orange present great opportunities to be upfront and comfortable with experts in their fields. During "The String's the Thing" each member of the Trio will speak about his instrument and demonstrate how it is his true voice.

Three-time award-winner of a fellowship in music composition granted by the New York Foundation for the Arts , James Emery, will talk about co-creating the trio forty years ago and his many years of distinguished musicianship that has heard him play in 25 countries worldwide. Emery plays his handcrafted guitar eloquently and with “staggering technical virtuosity,” as quoted in All About Jazz.  Yet, he is very accessible to the general public as well as his jazz ensemble students at SUNY Orange. Emery has also been the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Cary Trust.

Rob Thomas is regarded as one of the most impressive jazz violinists currently working. His breadth of ideas, stunning technique, and total command of the jazz vocabulary explain audibly why he holds the record for the longest occupancy of the violin chair in the venerable chamber jazz ensemble, the String Trio of New York. He is currently a professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He is the author of A Modern Method for Violin Scales, to be to be published by Hal Leonard in January 2018. He loves to share his knowledge in a relaxed, conversational style.

Bassist Tony Marino tours internationally with the Dave Liebman Big Band, but he is well-known locally as the acoustic and electric bass player for the String Trio of New York  and the Chris Parker Band. His versatility and wide range of musicality has afforded him opportunities to accompany and record with numerous artists from folk to pop. He is a gifted player whose warmth as an individual makes him easy to question and to become acquainted.

Come, learn, and enjoy to this intimate class.
