"Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary", the recently released American film directed by John Scheinfeld, is narrated by Denzel Washington. The film chronicles the life of Coltrane in his own words, and includes interviews with such notables as Wynton Marsalis, Sonny Rollins, Cornel West, Common, and Bill Clinton.

The screening of this new film kicks off a weekend of three events honoring John Coltrane, the man and his sound.  Scheduled for Friday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in Harriman Hall 111 Film Theatre, this event is free and open to the public.

The film explores the global power and impact of the music of John Coltrane and reveals the passions, experiences, and forces that shaped his life and revolutionary sounds.  Described as “a sound that was all his own” Coltrane’s sound –his music—is demonstrated in clips of him playing and is admired through commentaries by famous musicians and a former US president.

Harriman Hall is located at 8 East Conkling Avenue on the Middletown campus of SUNY Orange. Free parking is available at nearby lots.

In addition to the film, a major concert by the renowned Dave Liebman and his big band will take place on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. and a master class on Coltrane’s legacy caps off the series on Monday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m.
