Yikes! Colors! Colors! Colors!… is the title of the art show in Orange Hall Gallery Loft May 9 to June 18.
Created by colorist, non-traditionalist painter, Kate Ferriter of Newburgh, the artworks focus on the ordinary, which have been transformed into dazzling, loosely painted nighttime cityscapes of signs, telephone poles, street and traffic lights, buildings, alleys, downed tree limbs, sparks, and docked boats. Ferriter has also included a few outdoor, daytime scenes.
The offbeat, odd and under-rated surroundings of the gritty urban scene are the places where she finds beauty in simple form. These elements in various degrees are commingled in her works and demonstrate “the excitement, ruckus, and craziness in what often are taken for granted in life.”
A reception at which the artist will welcome viewers will take place on Sunday, May 18 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Ferriter grew up under the guidance of her mother and great aunt who were both artists. She recalls that she “always seemed to be drawing something.” Eventually, she attended Massachusetts College of Art. Although she works predominantly in oil on canvas, she also does works in watercolor, gouache, pastel, and printmaking. She enjoys painting plein air as well as in her studio. Her works can be found in private collections across the USA, Nicaragua, England, and Ireland.
The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday. Please note: the college is closed on May 15, on Memorial Day weekend, and Fridays in June.
