Middletown Art Group Spring Exhibition opens...

In 1946, the Middletown Art Group was formed “for the purpose of exchanging ideas between artists, craftsmen, art teachers, and students and of providing an atmosphere in which to improve individual skills and respect for the efforts of others.”  Amazingly, after all these years – 72 to be exact-- MAG continues that tradition and throughout the year sponsors demonstrations and lectures which promote the study of the arts.  It also has an open membership which encourages people of all skills to join, share, and learn.

Its annual show at SUNY Orange, the Middletown Art Group 2018 Members Spring Exhibition, highlights recent works. This year 93 artworks have been registered and they will be on view, May 7 through June 13 in Orange Hall Gallery. In addition, two related exhibits will be installed within the domain of Orange Hall Gallery and run concurrently with MAG’s big show. The organization’s treasurer, Dennis Fanton, will be displaying thirty pastels and oils in Orange Hall Gallery Loft, and the judge of MAG’s exhibition, Susan Hope Fogel, will have four very large paintings on the wall of Orange Hall Gallery Fringe.

The reception celebrating the three exhibits is scheduled for Sunday, May 20 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. during which time pianist Bev Poyerd will play jazz standards, classical, and contemporary favorites. The exhibits and reception are free and open to the public.

In addition, three members are setting up their easels and tables, paints and other implements for the mini-demos they will give with commentaries throughout the afternoon:  Anne W. Kelly ~ working with pastels,  Frederic Spione ~ sketching with paint, and Mitchell Saler ~ landscape in oils.  Just as last year, the co-chairs of this members’ spring exhibition and reception are artists Veronica  Plucinski and Denise Shelby Isseks.

With nearly one hundred artworks accepted for the show, the MAG exhibition has great variety in media including porcelain, stone, clay, photography, oil, acrylic, pastel, charcoal, watercolor, mixed media, recycled objects, and collage. Also, style, technique, and size vary as well.

Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday - 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through May, and in June, Monday through Thursday - 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. only. The gallery is closed Memorial Day Weekend.
