Food Services and Bookstore Update

SUNY Orange students,

Most of you should have received a Food Services and Bookstore update letter, along with a complimentary Avanti micro market food card, in the mail, or from Student Services if you registered for classes in person last week. If you did not receive your Avanti card, you may stop by the Welcome Desk in the Shepard Student Center in Middletown or the Security Desk outside of the Library in Kaplan Hall in Newburgh.

The College Association, in conjunction with SUNY Orange, will be unveiling its new arrangements for food services and bookstore operations when the Fall 2017 semester begins Aug. 28.

With respect to food services, the Association has two new food options planned. A partnership with Avanti Markets, through a contract with Pepsi of the Hudson Valley, will provide micro markets at three locations on the Middletown campus and one location on the Newburgh campus.

In Middletown, the new markets will be located in the Rowley Center (at the Sarah Wells Café on the ground floor), the Bio-Tech Building (in the South Street lobby) and the Shepard Student Center (in the Fireplace Lounge). The Newburgh location will be at the 2nd floor café space in Kaplan Hall.

The new micro markets will be accessible to students, employees and visitors whenever the buildings are open for operation. This means food choices will be available during nights and weekends, in addition to the traditional daytime hours.

A micro market is an unmanned retail space where individuals can purchase food and beverages. Our markets will include a wide variety of fresh and healthy items that will be restocked regularly. Refrigerated cases will contain fresh foods like salads and sandwiches, as well as beverages, fruits, vegetables and other perishable snacks. A variety of non-perishable snacks will also be available.

Customers can select the food or beverage they wish to purchase and pay at the intuitive, self-checkout kiosk. Kiosks will accept a variety of convenient payment options such as credit/debit cards, fingerprint reader and more. The enclosed Avanti card can be preloaded with funds and then used to pay for food. You can activate your Avanti card at any of the micro market kiosks. The Welcome Desk in the Shepard Student Center and the Security desk located outside of the library in Kaplan Hall will have Avanti cards available for those students who registered after this letter was sent or who need to replace a lost card.

More technically savvy customers may wish to download and use the Avanti Markets App as a payment source.

The College Association will identify a student liaison who will accept feedback regarding the micro markets, and will address issues and concerns as necessary.

Because the locations are unmanned, each market will also be outfitted with security cameras to monitor activity and transactions. Those who commit theft or damage market equipment will be subject to disciplinary action.

The College Association is also tapping into the highly popular food truck craze that is growing locally, regionally and nationally. Allan’s Falafel will operate a truck at the Middletown campus (along the walkway that connects East Conkling Street with the inner campus loop) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; and will be stationed outside the Tower Building in Newburgh each Tuesday and Thursday. Hours of operation will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Association may seek to contract with other trucks to fill in the remaining days at both campuses.

Allan's Falafel will be serving hot food and will begin operations on Monday, Sept. 11. It is important to note that Avanti cards will NOT be accepted by any food trucks that operate at the College. Please note that in the original letter, Empanada Master was listed as operating its food truck on alternate days from Allan's Falafel. However, Empanada Master has decided it will be unable to set up its truck at either of the campuses in the near future,

Changes are coming to the bookstores as well. This summer, the College Association finalized a contract authorizing Follett Higher Education Group to manage SUNY Orange Bookstore operations on both campuses. Follett assumed oversight of the bookstores on June 22.

This new arrangement removes the Association from its day-to-day management of bookstore operations but allows the Association to retain oversight of the bookstores through its contract with Follett. Follett is a family-owned business with extensive experience in the community college sector, operating approximately 1,200 local stores and more than 1,700 online stores. The company maintains bookstores on a dozen SUNY community college campuses, including SUNY Dutchess and SUNY Ulster.

In partnership with Follett, the Association hopes this arrangement will help students save money on course materials; provide students and faculty with higher education tools that are more innovative, offer a broader selection of digital course materials, give faculty wider availability to course material options; present a hassle-free customer experience, and provide an assortment of general merchandise and apparel.

Once the Fall semester is under way, Follett has plans to renovate the Middletown campus store in order to bring customers a fresh, updated shopping experience. In addition to the brick-and-mortar stores on each campus, Follett will offer a robust digital marketplace to the College community via its e-Follett online retail presence.
