College to Roll Out New Password Reset Tool; Will Require More Secure Passwords

Information Technology Services takes your security and online safety seriously. Due to recent global events, we have enacted a more robust security platform in support of online access for SUNY Orange employees and students. Part of this enhanced security addresses the password policies at the College.

As you likely realize, passwords for SUNY Orange’s online services are not required to have any significant level of password complexity. You may be familiar with the standards required by your online banking providers and recommended by many other online accounts. Our intent is to have SUNY Orange passwords meet those same standards.

We will be rolling out a new Password Reset utility, effective tomorrow (Wednesday, Nov. 30). You will know that it is active because you will be required to create security questions upon your first login. Once you have set your security questions, you will be able to easily reset your password at any point in time if you happen to lose it.  We are asking that you take the time to change your password in the coming months to something that meets our new standard, which is:

  • Password is case sensitive.
  • Must be at least 8 characters long.
  • Must not include any of the following values: password / test
  • Must not include part of your name or user name.
  • Must not include a common word or commonly used sequence of characters.
  • Must have at least 3 types of the following characters: Uppercase (A-Z), Lowercase (a-z), Number (0-9), Symbol (!, #, $, etc.), or other language characters not listed above
  • New password may not have been used previously.

 

You will also be able to retrieve forgotten usernames and change your security questions in the future.  You are asked to complete your password reset on or before Jan. 18 2017. If you are unable to update your password by that time, we will be automatically required you to change it upon your next login after Jan. 18.
