Voices ~ Art That Speaks Out

Announcing the opening of an art exhibition entitled, "Voices: Art That Speaks Out"

The Mental Health Association of Orange County is sponsoring this moving exhibit which has been organized by MHA Board President Patricia Quinn. Director of the Ann Street Gallery, Virginia Walsh, juried the show which will be on view Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., August 25-September 17, 2015. The venue is the Mindy Ross Gallery in Kaplan Hall at SUNY Orange, located at 81 First St., Newburgh, NY.

In addition to regular hours, the art reception for the show is scheduled for Saturday, August 29 from 5 to 8 p.m., during which music will be provided by pianist Emily Landsman. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. The reception coincides with Newburgh Last Saturdays #NBLS, an arts initiative.  The college will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2015.

The show gives “Voice” through the artworks of 23 artists whose works are in various media: paintings, drawings, collages, sculptures, and 3-dimensional pieces which emphasize the problems resulting from acts of sexual assault and other issues like mental health, the environment, and inequality.

A true purpose exists for this show: to raise awareness of the Rape Crisis services offered by the MHA, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In the past year, rape crisis centers have experienced a major loss in funding through a combination of local, state, and federal cuts.  Consequently, another very important reason this show has been organized is to put in the forefront the importance of restoring that funding to Rape Crisis services and to otherwise raise funds for these essential services, through both large and small donors.
