"Artists of Excellence ~ works by Barbara Bonham and Stuart Sachs" in Kaplan Hall

The Artists of Excellence exhibit series continues with exquisite works by artists Barbara Bonham of Middletown and Stuart Sachs of Newburgh. The artworks will be on display now through June 25 in the glass vitrine cases located in the foyer of the Mindy Ross Gallery at Kaplan Hall. Because of all the windows in the building, and in particular this area, the pieces are bathed in natural light.

Both artists are sculptors. However, they work in very different media. Also, Bonham's works are representational and Sachs' works are abstract.

Bonham’s sculptures are made from various kinds of clay bodies with finishes from white slip to oxides, while other pieces are finished with oils and metallic patinas and Byzantine style mosaics. Well-known for his large steel rod sculptures, several of which are stationed around the first floor of Kaplan Hall, Sachs presents another interest in this exhibit. With the exception of one piece made of stainless steel and bronze, his small works on exhibit are glass castings.

Primarily a self-taught artist, Bonham’s sculptures are her interpretation of time and place. She has lived in many countries and within many cultures having been born in Venezuela and raised in Africa and Asia. However, clay always seemed to be available leading to her creating with it. Bonham’s ultimate goal is to be a conduit mastering whichever elements it takes to interpret the images which come to her through her life’s experiences.

A professor of art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, Sachs is founding member of the Newburgh Arts and Culture Commission, on which he served as its chairman in 2008 and 2009. He is also on the Board of Directors of the Orange County Arts Council. His work encompasses sculpture, performance, and new media installation as well as furniture and architectural metalwork and woodwork for home, office and commercial settings.

The foyer is actually the area between the Mindy Ross Gallery and the Orange County Trust Company Great Room on the eastern end of the building. Viewing hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. During June, the College is closed on Fridays.

The exhibit is free and open to the public and presented by Cultural Affairs to which questions may be directed: (845) 341-4891/9386 and cultural@sunyorange.edu. You may also visit the Cultural Affairs website at www.sunyorange.edu/culturalaffairs.
