Middletown Art Group Spring Members' Exhibition Opens May 9

Two lovely events in Orange Hall Gallery each spring are the Middletown Art Group [MAG] Spring Members' Exhibition and its accompanying reception. This active group counts 80 members and is celebrating its 68th anniversary.

The annual show, which will be on view May 9 through June 18, will include artworks in a variety of media: oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, graphite, wax pencils, collage, mixed media, sculpture, and photography. The reception for the show is scheduled on Sunday, May 18 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Judging the show is awarding-winning fine artist Clayton Buchanan of Newburgh. Buchanan is a pastelist whose style is representational realism. His use of color brings his paintings to life as captured moments in time.

During the reception from 2:40 to 3:45 p.m., Linda Barboni of the Town of Goshen, will give a watercolor demonstration entitled “Expressive Skies in Landscapes.” Barboni works in watercolor and pastels, as well as mixed media. She holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts, NYC and is a member of the North East Watercolor Society, Garrison Art Center, Pascack Art Association, and the Orange County Arts Council. She states, “Painting subjects vary and include landscapes en plein air, still life, figure, and floral. I like to keep mixing it up, enjoying the stimulation of diversity.”

And from 1 to 2:35 p.m., pianist Bev Poyerd of Washingtonville, a favorite of the art group, will play contemporary, jazz, and classical compositions. Awards will be presented at the end of the reception at 3:45 p.m. by the show chair Renee Buckheit and MAG president Jill Constantino, both of Middletown.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday.  However, the College is closed on Memorial Day weekend and Fridays in June. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

Even though the name “Middletown Art Group” seems to give the impression of exclusiveness to Middletown residents, that is not the case as members reside in other parts of Orange County as well as Ulster, Sullivan, Dutchess, Sussex and Pike Counties.
