SUNY Orange Newburgh Campus Digital Virtual Tour of Kaplan Hall 2010 OPEN Since 1990, SUNY Orange has maintained an educational presence in the City of Newburgh. Throughout that time, overall enrollment at the College has steadily increased while demand for expanded course offerings in Newburgh has grown at a more rapid pace. In 2011, shortly after the College has celebrated its 60th anniversary and marked its 20th year in Newburgh, SUNY Orange will officially open Kaplan Hall. As the centerpiece of the College’s growing Newburgh branch campus, this 85,000-square-foot building will allow the College to double its enrollment capacity, and provide students with greater access to those tools that will fuel their continued education, career advancement and personal growth. BEGIN VIDEO 0:00 With its burgeoning branch campus tucked neatly into one square block along Broadway in downtown Newburgh, SUNY Orange is creating an urban educational hub capable of fulfilling the academic requirements of a diverse community. In concert with its educational mission, the Newburgh campus will be a bellwether for sustainability. Kaplan Hall is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council for LEED Certification and will include many environmentally friendly features both internally and externally. 0:30 One important component of reducing the carbon footprint of the building will be a rooftop array of photovoltaic panels, expected to generate 2.5 percent of the building’s annual electric power needs. 0:44 As you move along First and Grand streets, you’ll notice how Kaplan Hall’s public facades have been designed with classic proportions to complement Newburgh’s historic East End architecture. Exterior materials including brick, cast stone and aluminum panels have been selected from local and regional sources. High-performance windows and sunshades will help moderate the building’s internal temperature. Energy efficient heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems will provide a high level of occupant comfort and a healthy indoor environment. 1:15 Those exterior walls that face toward the campus have been designed to reflect the high-tech functions within the building. In contrast to the public street facades, the contemporary approach to the campus-side of Kaplan Hall suggests a break with tradition and a more open-minded approach to architecture. A campus plaza will be formed by a green roof that will cover three levels of underground parking. This will help reduce heat islands, remove unsightly surface parking and create an inviting open space for students, staff and visitors to enjoy. A wide pedestrian promenade will join Kaplan Hall and the campus plaza with the existing Tower Building. The greenery of the campus plaza will be visible from within Kaplan Hall and will present changing foliage throughout the seasons. Rainwater will be collected from the roof of Kaplan Hall in underground cisterns for irrigation of the plaza greenery. Water efficient landscaping and native plants will adorn the campus. 2:10 Kaplan Hall’s interior will be inviting, and equally sustainable. It will feature local and regional materials selected for their low environmental impact. Again, recycled content materials and energy-efficient fixtures will be utilized extensively. Indoor air quality will be enhanced through the use of materials that are healthy for occupants and easy to maintain. Staff and faculty will be surrounded by the latest environmental and technical innovations in classrooms and laboratories. Space will be carved out for students to study quietly or work together in small groups. Natural light will filter freely into the building. Large windows will offer ample views of the inner campus, the City of Newburgh, the Hudson River and Mount Beacon. END VIDEO CLOSING Once Kaplan Hall is open, and renovations to the nearby Tower Building complete, SUNY Orange’s Newburgh campus will be fully equipped to address the needs of its students today, and prepared to offer new and exciting opportunities in the future. This state-of-the art urban campus will demonstrate the College’s dual commitment to education and sustainability, while further cementing its promise to enrich the lives of Orange County residents through the highest-quality education possible.
