Behavioral Intervention

Mission:

The Behavioral Intervention Team is a collaborative interdisciplinary group of dedicated professionals whose mission is to meet two distinctive objectives. First, the BIT enhances institutional awareness of potential threats to campus safety. Second, the BIT can provide students, faculty and staff with opportunities to assess and manage problematic behavior before this behavior becomes a formal violation of the Student Code of Conduct.

Purpose:

As a result of growing national trends on college campuses of mental health issues, SUNY Orange created the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT). In order to promote the safety and health of its students the BIT addresses student behaviors that are disruptive and may include mental health and/or safety issues.

The purpose of the SUNY Orange BIT is:

  • To be proactive in addressing student behavior.
  • To support the disciplinary process.
  • To utilize the expertise of the committee members to address student behavior.        
  • To centralize reporting of student behavioral concerns.
  • To immediately respond to behavioral concerns.

Charge:

The team will meet regularly for the purpose of discussing students that have come to the attention of the Vice President for Student Services, security, or any member of the team.  The team will devise action plans to address the needs of these students and to ensure the safety and security of the College community.  The committee is an advisory group and not a replacement of a call to security or our current Code of Conduct procedures.

Focus:

Distressed students, mental disturbances, alarming behavior, review of applicants to the college convicted of a felony or dismissal from other colleges, students in crisis, disruptive behavior, students out of touch with reality, and angry, hostile, or homeless students.  The team will review all documentation in order to make an informal recommendation. Recommendations will be documented. 

Types of recommendations:

  1. No action
  2. Counseling referral
  3. Psychiatric evaluation
  4. Behavioral contract
  5. Disciplinary action
  6. Interim suspension pending psychiatric evaluation.
