Message from the Vice President for Student Services

I invite you to participate in the 21st annual Sojourner Truth Awards Program, Orange County Community College's annual recognition program which acknowledges the achievements of deserving students and encourages consideration of college attendance as an option for students from groups which are traditionally under-represented in the college population.
We are asking that school districts coordinate the selection process internally, forwarding to us the list of students being recognized in the district. As in recent years, we will emphasize the achievement for which students are being recognized. Criteria for recognition have been sent to your individual schools. We ask that you complete one nomination form (also sent to your schools) for each student being recognized. We will honor students in grades 6 – 12. In order to complete arrangements in a timely manner, we need you to forward the typed list of students to be recognized together with the original nomination forms to my office no later than January 15, 2010. This is a firm deadline. Copies of these forms will be shared with the students. If you are not submitting any nominations, please let us know.
All students selected will be invited to the awards ceremony and receive a certificate. We appreciate the assistance of school personnel in carrying out the ceremony itself. Having help from people who know the students and who can promote appropriate behavior contributes significantly to the program's success. Given the number of recipients we anticipate from your district, we would appreciate having school representatives in attendance; we would like to know their names and telephone numbers by February 1, 2010.
