WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ACADEMIC ADVISING AND HOW TRIO STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES CAN HELP YOU
MAKING USE OF YOUR ADVISOR AND ACADEMIC ADVISING EXPERIENCE
Academic advising is a shared responsibility between you and your advisor. You will want to work closely with an advisor to decide on a program of study that will enable you to take appropriate courses in proper sequence to meet graduation requirements.
HOW CAN YOU MAKE THE MOST OF AN ACADEMIC ADVISING RELATIONSHIP
- Identify courses that interest you and meet your degree requirements.
- Become familiar with the TRIO Student Support Services staff and other resources at SUNY Orange where you can discuss your academic goals, career goals, and selection of a major.
- Take the initiative to contact your advisor or a TRIO staff member. Don’t wait!
- An advisor can present options, but the decisions you make are your responsibility.
- Keep an open mind regarding the suggestions your advisor makes.
- Be on time for your scheduled appointment.
- Take time to read through course requirements.
- Become familiar with academic policies and procedures by reviewing the catalog and Course Bulletin.
- Ask questions. Continue to ask questions until you understand.
- Know the academic calendar. Be aware of deadlines. Know when to register and add/drop classes.
REMEMBER: AS ADVISORS WE…
- Teach you how to complete forms.
- Never fill out registration or other forms for you.
- Make suggestions for what classes to take based on your information and the program of study you select.
- Inform you of making good decisions.
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR ADVISOR
How do I...
- Choose, declare, or change my major?
- Repeat, drop, or withdraw from courses?
- Determine the number of credits I should take each semester?
- Know when I have fulfilled the requirements to graduate?
- Who can help me with my study skills, time management, goal setting, and test taking methods?
- Who do I talk to if I have a learning disability?
