Workforce Education
Grant enters second phase at SUNY Orange
3/14/2006
MIDDLETOWN - As a group, small business may be fastest-growing
segment of economic growth in Orange County, but on a business-by-business
basis, too often owners find themselves struggling with budgets
that don't leave room for training that would allow them to upgrade
technology skills or provide critical management and marketing
training.
A SUNY Workforce Education grant, secured through a joint effort
between Orange County Community College and the Orange County Chamber
of Commerce has just entered its second phase. Implemented through
the college's Continuing and Professional Education (CAPE) Department,
classes will be available to small businesses at a reduced rate
- as low as $10 to $20 per class - at both the Newburgh and Middletown
campuses.
These courses are offered as an extension of an already successful
program, begun in 2003, that has served over 300 individuals from
77 small businesses and not-for-profit agencies.
Registration is ongoing; classes begin in March 2006. Please call
the CAPE office for information about classes (845) 341-4770.

SUNY Orange professors
present distance learning at national conference
Orange County Community College professor of business Steve Winter
had been teaching with chalk and a blackboard for forty years when
the web came along and revolutionized the way he did things.
Now all his courses are "web-enhanced," meaning even
his conventional classes have a web-based component. He's become
such an expert that he joined his colleague, professor Lucinda
Fleming, one of the designers of the SUNY Orange online training
model, to present at eLearning 2006 at Savannah, Ga.
"I noted that the courses I teach are impacted by the dynamics
of the environment, and technology is one of the major forces driving
change," says Winter. "In academia, this translates into
computer applications, especially online education. Three years
ago Lucinda Fleming, with her encouragement and support, was my
catalyst for becoming a Distant Learning instructor. The convergence
of Distance Learning and traditional classroom teaching, I hope,
benefit all my students, the College, and the community"
A national event, eLearning 2006 is one of the most comprehensive
annual distance learning conferences available for educators. Fleming
and Winter gave a presentation titled "Log On or Retire? Getting
Senior Faculty Online," which was well-received. They covered
how to recruit and motivate faculty, and described SUNY Orange's
successful model.
Fleming, who developed and taught her first online courses in
1990, is currently serving as the department chair of business
management at SUNY Orange.
Winter has taught "Principles of Marketing" completely
online for several semesters, and all of his traditional face-to-face
classes feature web-enhancements.
For more information, please contact Lucinda Fleming at 845-341-4440.

SUNY Orange's
English as a Second Language (ESL) Program to be expanded by new
coordinator.
Middletown/Newburgh - Orange County Community College's department
of Continuing and Professional Education (CAPE) has hired Debra
Horowitz as its new English as a Second Language (ESL) coordinator.
An experienced ESL educator, Ms. Horowitz has a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Spanish, a Master of Arts degree in Bilingual Education
and a Master of Business Administration degree. Her ESL teaching
career, spanning 17 years, has been devoted to creating programs
that best meet the needs of many non-English speaking populations.
The ESL program is for any adult from any language background who
wants to learn to speak English.
Horowitz is excited about the possibilities. "What makes
our program unique is that a student who has progressed through
the non-credit ESL program can then choose to continue into college
credit ESL classes and attain a two-year college degree," she
says.
Another important aspect of the program, says Horowitz, is community
outreach. "There is a tremendous need for this information," she
says. Horowitz intends to work with school districts, administrators,
teachers and other bilingual educators to inform parents and any
other groups who might benefit from the SUNY Orange programs.
There are many classes available at various convenient times both
at the Middletown and Newburgh campuses, including beginner and
intermediate classes as well a specialty classes in pronunciation,
advanced grammar, vocabulary and business English. People of all
language backgrounds are encouraged to register.
The ESL program provides all levels of instruction in listening,
speaking, reading, and writing everyday English as well as for
professional and academic success. Please call (845) 341-4593 for
more information.
The SUNY Orange Continuing and Professional Education
Department (CAPE) has been training and educating Orange
County's workforce for more than 50 years. CAPE is committed
to reach out to employers and professionals to see the business
community grow and prosper, now and in the years ahead.

SUNY Orange Job Fair Readiness
seminar open to the public
MIDDLETOWN and NEWBURGH - If you aren't ready for the Job Fair,
more than seventy potential employers looking for you may miss
you in the crowd.
Orange County Community College's department of Career Services
will offer one-hour seminars on "Job Fair Readiness" on
Tuesday, March 14 at the College's Newburgh Extension Center at
One Washington Center in Newburgh and on Thursday, March 16 at
the Career Services Office on the third floor of the College Commons
at the Middletown campus. Both seminars begin at 11 a.m., and are
free and open to the public.
"Being ready gives you an advantage in just about every aspect
of the job," says Career Services coordinator Carole Wentzel,
who has organized the SUNY Orange Job Fair for 15 years, one of
the largest in Orange County.
The SUNY Orange Job Fair, which will take place this year on Thursday,
May 18 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Physical Education Building
at the Middletown campus, draws some of the county's largest employers,
too, including Frontier Communications, Crystal Run Healthcare,
Cellular One, Orange Regional Medical Center, Blue Cross/Blue Shield,
as well as other big names: FedEx, UPS, MetLife, and Bank of America
will also be there.
Job seekers who aren't prepared to meet with employers, says Wentzel,
will miss a golden opportunity.
"Employers are gathered in one place to search for motivated,
talented workers," Wentzel says. "The person who comes
with the right attitude, dressed appropriately, and prepared has
an edge over the competition. It makes an important difference
to an employer to see a candidate who makes the most of an opportunity
like this."
Over 500 candidates for jobs attended last year's two Job Fairs,
says Wentzel. This year, both allied health employers and other
employers will be combined into a single Job Fair.

the Job Fair, please call 845-341-4444 or visit the SUNY Orange

Healthy Orange at SUNY Orange

Dr. Jean Hudson

Executive Edward Diana
MIDDLETOWN - "If you want to change community behavior,
you need to look at a multiplicity of behaviors, so you need a
multiplicity of partners," said Orange County Commissioner
of Health Dr. Jean Hudson on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Orange County
Community College's Wellness Screening.
For a three-day period, from Feb. 13-16, faculty, staff and students
could sign up on the job to be tested for a variety of factors:
glucose, blood pressure, and other health signals that can be monitored
for wellness. Dr. Hudson was delighted with the turnout: although
35 individuals signed up that morning, including walk-ins, 53 people
were screened.
SUNY Orange is a partner, among others including Orange Regional
Medical Center and the Middletown School District, in the newly-revived
Healthy Orange initiative, which is in effect in a pilot program
at SUNY Orange, as well as other sites around the county, including
J.W. Chorley School in Middletown.
County Executive Edward Diana, an alumnus of SUNY Orange, spoke
as well. "As a former health educator, I realize the importance
of wellness - that's why this initiative is so important to us
here in Orange County."
The Healthy Orange initiative isn't just screening for potential
illness, either - it's a combination of work-site and school-site
smoking cessation programs, exercise, nutrition and education programs,
too.
Healthy Orange is a project that is near and dear to the heart
of Mary Mulrooney-Kenny, director of health services at SUNY Orange. "In
the past day we were able to screen over 100 of our employees," said
Mulrooney-Kenny, "with multiple risk factors. This is just
the beginning of what I hope will be a long and productive effort.
I thank you all for this opportunity."
