This February, five selected Orange County Community College staffers will be flown to San Antonio, Texas to attend the prestigious fourth annual USA Funds Symposium of 55 minority-serving postsecondary educational institutions nationwide. All expenses for the SUNY Orange representatives will be paid for by USA Funds, the nation's largest education-loan guarantor.

According to their web site, at http://www.usafunds.org/, the 45-year-old organization "links colleges, universities, private career schools, private lenders, students and parents to promote financial access to higher learning."

NEWBURGH - When Gov. George Pataki announced to the crowd gathered today at the Orange County Community College Newburgh Extension Center Assembly Room at One Washington Center that the budget he would submit next Tuesday would contain a proposal for an additional $15 million for an annex campus, he received a standing ovation.

Focusing, he said, on intelligent growth in Orange County, Pataki said it has long been a priority of his office to provide more funding for economic development. "Today," Pataki said, "we take another step."

Pataki made mention of his commitment to "bringing downtowns back," alluding to SUNY Orange president Bill Richard's determination to locate the Newburgh campus in downtown Newburgh.

Pataki also referred not only to the role the College plays in the economic development of the city, noting that the presence of the institution makes the area more attractive to companies, but also to the long-range role the College plays in the education of its citizens.

"We have to make sure our great State University system gets better and better," Pataki said. "Community colleges play a critical role in allowing people to develop the skills they need to get out into the workplace."

The governor also thanked Senator Bill Larkin for his tireless efforts on behalf of the College and the city of Newburgh, and the Kaplan family for their generosity toward the project.   "You have the most passionate fighter – not just for this project, but for Orange County. This just doesn't happen without dedication and passion," Pataki said of Senator Larkin.

William Kaplan spoke briefly, mentioning his family, and the various terms throughout the generations that would have described the moment, finally settling on the word, "Awesome."

"One of the great community colleges we have is Orange County Community College," Pataki said. "It's outstanding."

A U-Haul truck filled with gifts from SUNY Orange faculty, staff and students to be delivered to needy families throughout Orange County in partnership with the Family Empowerment Project

MIDDLETOWN - On Wednesday, Dec. 14, James Schueler, project manager, and Sharon David, service coordinator for the Family Empowerment Project loaded a U-Haul full of gifts from SUNY Orange faculty, staff and students as the third annual Adopt-A-Family program wrapped up in the bitter cold.

"It's totally unbelievable," says Schueler of the donations. "It's really because of [the college] that we're able to take care of the whole families."

"It floors you," says David. "It really does. You get requests in, and they're granted."

Through the Adopt-A-Family program at SUNY Orange, nearly 70 needy families are provided gifts, food and other necessities by almost every College department. Each department adopts one or two families.

"The mother asked for a bathrobe," says English professor Anne Sandor, whose department regularly adopts a family, "but we always throw in something extra that she would never buy for herself."

Schueler, whose organization provides necessities year-round to families in need, works with several other organizations throughout the holidays to provide gifts for families, but for the neediest families, he turns to SUNY Orange. "The really desperate ones," he says, "need OCCC."

The most stirring story this year was that of one boy, who was blind, and so severely disabled that ordinary gifts would be unsuitable. His family was "adopted" by the College's department of Health Services. The director, Mary Mulrooney-Kenny, R.N., learned his lifelong dream was to attend the Radio City Music Hall Show.

The department not only bought tickets for him and his mother - they bought a third ticket for a nurse to accompany him, and researched Radio City Music Hall to make sure that there were sufficient accommodations for his disability. Additionally, they gave him spending money.

The Family Empowerment Project, according to Schueler, started off over a decade ago with simple holiday baskets, and has grown since to the large-scale giving project it is today. Still, says Schueler: "It's really through OCCC that we're able to take care of the whole family."

Eileen Lux, grants coordinator for human resources at SUNY Orange, who coordinates the Adopt-A-Family project with Schueler, loves to talk about it, but cannot do so for long. "I get tears in my eyes," she says with a smile.
