SUNY Orange to host 2005 Pryluck Distinguished Lecture: "When Duty Calls"

Photo: Angela SportelliDespite the fact that it was to support her husband, a lieutenant in the U.S. Marines and Marine Reserves, Angela Sportelli-Rehak knew that moving her family over and over took an emotional toll. In fact, Sportelli-Rehak could see that emotional stages affecting her family and the other military families around her were unique.

With a background in educational and child psychology, Sportelli-Rehak was especially well-equipped to write the children's book "When Duty Calls," a work so successful First Lady Laura Bush recently featured it on Meet the Press. "[It's] a great book for children who want to know about what it's like to serve our country in the United States Military," Mrs. Bush said.

Sportelli-Rehak will be at Orange County Community College on Wednesday, April 6, at 7 p.m. in Harriman Hall at the Middletown campus on Waywayanda Avenue, Room 111, as the College's 2005 Pryluck Distinguished Lecturer. This lecture is free and open to the public.

For more information, please call (845) 341-4769.

Sportelli-Rehak is now a college instructor in Toms River, N.J. in the field of educational and child psychology, and a mother of three. Her web site, www.unclesamskids.com, offers information for parents, as well as activities for children.

The Pryluck Distinguished Lecture Series, administered through the College's Educational Foundation, is a lasting gift made possible through the generosity of Shep and Edna Pryluck, former owners of Pryluck's Pharmacy in Middletown. Longtime community supporters, the Prylucks have created a permanent endowment so every year the College can host a Distinguished Lecture Series, in addition to a scholarship fund designed to benefit students demonstrating financial need and studying in the College's nursing program.

Major Barbara to be performed at SUNY Orange

MIDDLETOWN - The Arts and Communication Department and the Apprentice Players at SUNY Orange are proud to present George Bernard Shaw's Major Barbara on April 13, 14, 15, 16 at 8 p.m. and on April 17 at 3 p.m. at Orange Hall Theater at the Middletown campus at 115 South Street. Tickets are $7 general admission, $5 for faculty, staff and seniors, $2 for students. Local high schools are invited to meet the cast and director at a special performance on April 12 at 8 p.m.

Major Barbara was first staged in 1905. In this comedy by Shaw, who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925, Andrew Undershaft, a millionaire armaments dealer played by Abe Kless, loves self-sufficiency and despises poverty. Meanwhile, his energetic daughter, Barbara, played by Jessica Beveridge, is a devout major in the Salvation Army. She sees her father as just another soul to be saved.

According to Max Schaefer, Professor of Communication and director of the production, Major Barbara depicts the conflict between real life and romantic imagination. "Shaw is at his best when he presents witty and sophisticated arguments mouthed by equal adversaries, and Major Barbara is one of the most provocatively outrageous comedies in his canon," he said. Schaefer added that Shaw's play is particularly meaningful this spring as the conflict in Iraq continues to dominate world headlines.

"As the war in Iraq continues, we need to analyze violence, idealism and the real politic," he said. Major Barbara is timeless in its ability to facilitate this kind of thinking."

The ensemble for this "Theatre In The Round" production consists of Elizabeth Guzman, David Marmanillo, John Conley, Rachelle Clavin, Phil Duss, Jacqueline Dion, Matthew Agazzi, Candice Papierowicz, Michael Vargas, Vince Misner, Jacqueline Clark, Jason Stecher and Christine Molter. John Michel will create the realistic period costumes and hair for the production.

For more information about Major Barbara, call (845) 341-4790. For reservations, call (845) 341-4789.

Orange Hall Theatre is completely handicapped accessible. Seating is limited, reservations are strongly recommended.
