Avoid Identity Theft: SUNY Orange
workshop shows you how
MIDDLETOWN - Orange County Community College's Financial Aid department
will sponsor a presentation on Identity Theft and Financial Literacy
on March 15 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event will be held in
the Fireplace Lounge on the first floor of the College Commons,
on the Middletown campus at 115 South Street in Middletown.
After a SUNY Orange student nearly became the victim of a scholarship
scam artist last year, Financial Aid department technical assistant
Deb Roe wanted to do more. She alerted that student in time to
contact his bank and avoid problems, but she was troubled. "He
was a smart kid," Roe said, "but they sounded professional.
That really got me concerned. How do we get information out to
more people [to prevent fraud]?"
The guest speakers will be John Cruise of Citizens Bank, who will
talk about preventing and dealing with identity theft, and James
Vallee of M&T Bank, who will cover financial literacy, which
includes credit reports, credit cards, and other important consumer
topics.
Handouts will be available for participants, which include titles
from the Federal Trade Commission and Citibank like "Creating
a Budget," "Preventing Fraud," and "ID Theft:
When Bad Things Happen to Your Good Name."
This program is free and open to the public. For more information,
please call Deb Roe at (845) 341-4190.

Congresswoman Sue Kelly holds
press conference at SUNY Orange
U.S.
Congresswoman Sue Kelly held a press conference today at SUNY Orange
to announce that she is introducing legislation in the U.S. House
of Representatives that would enable college students or parents
to deduct all tuition expenses on their federal income tax return. "With
tuition costs rising faster than salaries and inflation, it is
time to provide Orange County families with the ultimate financial
aid for college," Kelly said. Dr. William Richards, president
of SUNY Orange, said "I strongly support Representative Kelly's
bill to allow families to deduct the full cost of college tuition
on their federal income tax return."
The name of the bill is More Money for College Act.
