SUNY Orange Hosts Chemistry Night for Kids
Orange County Community College’s Science and Engineering
department, along with the American Chemical Society (ACS) will
host a Chemistry night for children ages eight to 14 on Thursday,
Oct. 21, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Horton Hall at the Middletown campus
at 115 South Street.
The event is free and open to the public.
The topic this year is Health and Wellness. There will be a short
demonstration, followed by hands-on experimentation for the children.
In the past the kids have had a great time, says SUNY
Orange chemistry professor Dr. Timothy MacMahon. “They may
even be a few small healthful explosions during the demonstration
portion. If explosions aren’t enough to get you here, there
will be light refreshments as well.”

is limited to approximately 50 people, and reservations are mandatory.
SUNY Orange offers Fall 2004 Admissions Open House
Orange County Community College will hold its Fall 2004 Admissions
Open House on Oct. 6 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the College
Commons at the Middletown campus at 115 South Street.
Prospective students are invited to explore academic opportunities
with professors, admissions counselors, and representatives from
Athletics and Student Life. Over 30 academic majors will be represented,
including those from new programs in Information Technology and
Laboratory Technology.
Visitors can also learn about the many transfer opportunities
to four-year schools, as well as career opportunities for graduates.
Scholarship and financial aid information will be available,
and
tours of the campus will be provided. Admissions counselors will
be on hand to discuss the process of entering college, and to
answer any and all questions.
Refreshments will be free, courtesy of BG Café and Blueberry
Mountain Ice Cream.
SUNY Orange celebrates Fall 2004 Convocation
Over 140 students will receive scholarships and award recognition
totaling more than $125,000 at Orange County Community College's
annual college-wide Fall Convocation. Dr. William Richards, SUNY
Orange president, will welcome students and guests on Thursday,
Sept. 23, at 6 p.m. in the Orange Hall Theater at the Middletown
campus at 115 South Street. Also in attendance will be Dr. David
Rule, vice-president for academic affairs,
A reception will follow at Orange Hall Theater.
The students will also receive a lapel pin emblazoned with the
College seal.
Funds for the scholarships are provided by the College's Educational
Foundation, the Alumni Association of Orange County Community College,
and the Orange County Community College Association.
SUNY Orange VP to attend prestigious institute
David L. Rule, vice-president of academic affairs at Orange County
Community College has been selected as one of only thirty-eight
community college leaders to attend to prestigious Executive Leadership
Institute sponsored by the League for Innovation in the Community
College in cooperation with The University of Texas at Austin and
the American Association of Community Colleges.
A national panel selected the thirty-eight participants from a
pool of approximately 100 applicants holding senior-level positions
of leadership in community colleges.
The purpose of the institute, to be held in Tempe, Arizona, December
5-10, 2004, is to provide and opportunity for potential community
college presidents or those in transition to review their abilities
and interests, to refine their skills, and to participate in discussions
on leadership with outstanding community college leaders in North
America.
"I'm delighted for this opportunity," says Rule, "not
only because it'll be a learning experience and a challenge for
me, but because of the timing. I'll be able to bring a lot of new
ideas and information back to SUNY Orange. As the College moves
forward, it's important to touch base with other colleges, other
leaders who have excelled."
The faculty of the institute are drawn from among outstanding community
college leaders across North America. Faculty members include community
college chief executive officers, experts in leadership development,
trustees of community colleges, presidential search consultants
and other prominent figures - including members of the League for
Innovation Board of Directors.
The League is an international association dedicated to catalyzing
the potential of the community college movement. The League hosts
conferences and institutes, develops Web resources, conducts research,
produces publications, provides services, and leads projects and
initiatives with members colleges, corporate partners and other
agencies in continuing efforts to make a positive difference for
students and communities.
SUNY Orange Continuing and Professional Education
announces defensive driving and
pre-licensing classes in September and October.
MIDDLETOWN- The six-hour defensive driving course that offers participants
a 10% discount on their auto insurance liability and collision premiums
for 36 months and also removes up to 4 points from driving records
is offered each month at Orange County Community College at the
main campus in Middletown on Saturdays from 9 a.m to 3:30 p.m. in
the Bio-Tech Building, Room 201. There will be a half-hour break
for lunch for all one-day Saturday Defensive Driving classes. Students
must attend both 2-session classes in order to receive certificate
of completion.The cost is $39 plus a $2 insurance fee.
The upcoming dates are Sept 18, Oct. 9 and Oct. 30.
The course is offered in a 2-session program, as well: on Monday
& Wednesday, Sept 20 and 22 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. each night
at the Newburgh Extension Center at the YMCA Building.
The course will be offered at the Middletown campus on Tuesday
and Wednesday, Oct. 5 and 7 in the Bio-Tech Building.
The five-hour pre-licensing course mandated for New York State
permit holders is also offered each month at Orange County Community
College in Middletown. Completion of the course results in the issuance
of the MV-278 form needed to make the road test appointment. The
cost is $29 plus a $2 insurance fee.
The following Saturday classes will be available at the main campus
in Middletown during the spring semester, on Sept. 11, Oct. 2 and
Oct. 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Bio-Tech Building, Room 201.
There will also be afternoon classes, on Tuesday, Sept. 21 in Hudson
Hall, Room 107, and on Wednesday, Oct. 13 in Hudson Hall, Room 207,
from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m.

SUNY Orange faculty win ASCAP awards
MIDDLETOWN- Christopher Parker and Dana Perna,
faculty members in the
SUNY Orange Arts and Communication department, have both been chosen
as
2004-2005 ASCAP award recipients this year.
The awards, made by the American Society of Composers, Authors
and
Publishers, reflect a continuing commitment on the part of that
organization to assist and encourage ASCAP composers. Awards are
granted
by an independent panel and are based upon the unique prestige
value of
each writer’s catalog of original composition, as well as
recent
performances in areas not surveyed by the Society.
The panelists include Peter Filichia, drama critic for the Newark
Star
Ledger, Melinda Newman, West Coast Bureau chief for Billboard magazine
and Michael Morgan, conductor of the Oakland-East Bay symphony
orchestra.
Professor Christopher Parker is an award-winning jazz and classical
music composer, whose latest album, Late in Lisbon, is available
now.
Instructor Dana Perna is a recording producer and a master engineer
for
artists such as Celine Dion and Michael Jackson, and the composer
of
over 125 compositions and arrangements.
