SUNY Orange student trustee sworn in
MIDDLETOWN- Ken Sincerbox was sworn in as the student trustee
of the Orange County Community College Board of Trustees on Monday,
September 13, 2004, replacing outgoing student trustee Don Boyce.
Sincerbox was elected to the position by the student body of SUNY
Orange in April of 2004.
The student trustee is a full voting member of the board, and
is expected to bring contribute the voice of the students to the
table, as well as to report activities of the student body to the
trustees, like athletics, clubs and organizations.
"It's an important job to fill," says Sincerbox. “When
I got here, I met a lot of people who got me involved. It gives
me the opportunity to hear [students’] concerns at a level
where the mission is set – where decisions are made – it
affects their time here at SUNY Orange.”
Sincerbox says he makes a concerted effort to listen to the students
he comes into contact with everyday, deliberately soliciting their
opinions on issues like Student Orientation, parking, and other
matters, as well as concerns they bring to him.
"I just walk around and ask what they're thinking. How do
you feel about this? They’re pretty open about what I’m
asking for,” he says. Most of all, he says, he wants to become
a familiar face to the students so that they know who to come to
and are willing to do so.
"I think I'm going to learn a lot," says Sincerbox. “I’ll
bring what I hear from the students, what we’re discussing
in packs – I’ll bring a different voice.”
