SUNY Orange professor to deliver keynote address at fifth annual “Fall Into Books”

MIDDLETOWN – Chris Godwin, professor of English at Orange County Community College, will deliver the keynote address at the Fifth Annual “Fall Into Books: Children’s and Young Adult Literature Conference” on Oct. 16, 2003 at the Mt. Alphonsus Retreat Center in Esopus, N.Y. The conference, which for the past two years has been hosted at SUNY Orange, is sponsored by seven library systems in Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan and Rockland counties. Over 150 participants are expected to attend from the New York metro area, Westchester, Long Island, the Albany area, Binghamton as well as from local counties.

The afternoon keynote address will be delivered by well-known children’s book author Robert Sabuda.

Godwin has developed and teaches a popular children’s literature course at SUNY Orange, and will give a talk called “Children’s Literature: Opening the Gates.” She has been the coordinator for the past two years for the Fall Into Books conference at the college. “Those were invigorating days for us,” she says. “In addition to learning so much from the participants, our students and faculty served as hosts, including the members of the children’s literature class.” These, she says, are some of the topics she’ll explore in her address.

Fall Into Books’ aim, says conference planner and Ramapo-Catskill children’s services librarian Randy Enos, is to encourage the participants to focus on and share good literature for children and young adults.

SUNY Orange IBIG coordinator to present at Continuing Education conference

Chosen for her leadership role in four-county Hudson Valley Worker Alliance

MIDDLETOWN – Joan Howard, coordinator of the Institute for Business, Industry and Government (IBIG) of Orange County Community College, will be a presenter at the 40th Anniversary Conference of the Continuing Education Association’s National Conference in Geneva, N.Y. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003. The theme of the conference is Continuing Excellence in Continuing Education.

Howard was chosen as a presenter for her leadership role in the Hudson Valley Worker Alliance, a five-year-old regional collaborative effort that has brought together business, labor and education providers to provide training and other services to regional workers. Organizations like Teamsters Local 445 and the region’s four community colleges in Orange, Ulster, Sullivan and Dutchess county meet regularly to discuss training needs and how they can be addressed.

The Alliance was created to more effectively address the need to upgrade the skills of incumbent workers and new hires. By working together the Alliance partners have been able to pool their expertise, apply for grant money and act as a resource for local businesses.

The joint effort means that businesses get the best resources of all the local colleges, says Howard, while colleges are able to train more people in their best respective areas.

“We’re collaborators instead of competitors,” Howard says. “More training is getting done. The colleges are contracting with each other, and we’re not reinventing the wheel. Everybody benefits from collaboration: all of us are serving more customers with more quality.”

Past programs have included a CDL program for Wakefern and other distribution centers, management training and communication workshops for Domco Tarkett Inc. and Akima Corporation. Several companies have benefited from extensive safety training.

The four colleges are continuously partnering in new and creative ways to provide their services and programs throughout the region, says Howard. They have recently submitted an application a SUNY Workforce grant in conjunction with the Council of Industry of South East.

SUNY Orange Massage Therapy instructor wins Distinguished Service Award

photo: Mary GallipeauMIDDLETOWNMary Gallipeau, a New York State licensed massage therapist and adjunct massage therapy instructor at Orange County Community College, has a mission: to educate the public about her profession.

“I never miss a chance to pick up a microphone in front of an organization,” Gallipeau says.

It’s a commitment that earned her the 2003 Distinguished Service Award, presented by the New York State Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association. She was honored with the prestigious award after her patients began a letter-writing campaign on her behalf; the letters were posted on a board during the convention in Richmond, Va.
Gallipeau, who is certified by Sloan-Kettering in medical massage for cancer patients, has been a featured speaker at various locations throughout Orange County, including the Senior Games, the Small Business Showcase, the Rotary Club and the Senior Council. She has also been a volunteer instructor for Encore classes at SUNY Orange.

Teaching has been one way for Gallipeau to fulfill her goal. “I guess I decided to teach because I have a concern about the caliber of person who was coming into the profession,” she says. The program at SUNY Orange is a good one, according to Gallipeau. “The education that the students are getting is extremely well-rounded and clinical.”
Gallipeau is a graduate of the Swedish Institute in New York City. She has an associate’s degree from SUNY Orange in exercise science, her bachelor’s degree in health and wellness from SUNY Empire State College and is presently pursuing her master’s degree in Social Policy with a concentration in health care, also from Empire State College.

Gallipeau also maintains a private practice in Middletown, at Therapeutic Motions Massage Therapy on Route 17M. She lives in Thompson Ridge.
