SUNY Orange president to narrate Winter Concert

photo: Dr. William RichardsMIDDLETOWN – SUNY Orange’s new president, Dr. William Richards, will narrate Copland’s Lincoln Portrait as part of the college’s Community Orchestra’s Winter Concert on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at 8 p.m. at Orange Hall Theater at the Middletown campus.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The evening will also feature Slavonic dances, an overture inspired by the rocky Scottish coast, and a symphony evoking heroism and the fallen statesmen, all directed by Dr. Hilarie Clark Moore and sponsored by the college’s department of arts and communication. The community-based orchestra, which brings together both students and talented musicians from the county, will perform Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, Op. 26, Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, Dvorák’s Slavonic Dances, Op. 46, No’s 5-8, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 55.

Since Aug. 1, 2003, Dr. Richards has served as president of Orange County Community College. Prior to taking the president’s position, Dr. photo: Dr. Hilarie Clark MooreRichards was the C.E.O. of the Westminster Campus of the Front Range Community College in Aurora, Colo. He holds a Ph.D. in Medieval Literature from the University of Denver, an M.A. In English/Writing from St. Louis University, and a B.A. in English from Regis College. The text for the Lincoln Portrait is drawn from Lincoln’s letters and speeches, and inspires Copland’s musical abstraction of Lincoln as man, historical figure, and statesman.

Founded in January 1998, the SUNY Orange Community Orchestra offers students and community members the opportunity of performing orchestral literature while bringing classical music to the county with three free concerts annually. For information concerning the Dec. 13 concert or the orchestra in general, please contact the arts and communication department at (845) 341-4787.
