SUNY Orange OTA Chair Flo Hannes to be honored with United Way Marion S Murphy Outstanding Individual Achievement Award

photo: quilt from Weaving the Community: All Gave some, some gave all. MIDDLETOWN- Flo Hannes, MS, OTR/L, and professor and chair of the Orange County Community College OTA Program has been chosen to receive Orange County United Way Marion S Murphy Outstanding Individual Achievement Award.

The award honors individuals whose value of and concern for people are demonstrated through their vision, leadership, service and commitment to the people in the Orange County community.

Flo initiated “Weaving the Community Together,” a community-quilting project using the power of occupation, to help the residents of Orange County to express their feelings about the September 11th World Trade Center tragedy. The project offered members of the Orange County community, home to a large population of NYC Firemen and Policemen, a way to grieve for their seventy-two lost neighbors, and to heal through community togetherness.

Kits with pre-cut squares, instruction sheets and templates to complete 9” squares were distributed by the SUNY Orange OTA students throughout the community. The response to the project was overwhelming. Over 1,600 quilt squares, completed by individuals, groups, health care institutions and schools throughout the County, were assembled into 34 quilts by dedicated community volunteers.

“The project provided all who participated with a sense of healing through occupation,” says Flo.

Flo will be honored on March 20th at a gala affair at Anthony’s Pier 9 in Newburgh, sponsored by the community and the thirty-eight Orange County United Way Participating Agencies. The highlight of this honor for Flo, she says, is the opportunity to promote the occupational therapy profession and the OTA Program at SUNY Orange when she receives her award in the presence of 500-600 community members and leaders

Insurance Information Night at the Newburgh Extension Center

NEWBURGH- No health insurance too often means poor health. That simply wasn't acceptable for Mary Mulrooney-Kenny, the director of health services at Orange County Community College, who's also a per diem ER nurse at St. Luke's in Newburgh.

"Too often you see the 'self-pay' box checked on the [hospital] form, and you know that means 'no pay,' and what that ultimately means, unfortunately, is that people who are sick or hurt are going to feel that they have no options to follow up with their care," says Mulrooney-Kenny.

To combat this mistaken notion, she's combined forces with the Family Health Center of Newburgh to offer a Free Informational Evening at the SUNY Orange Newburgh Extension Center on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the 2nd floor Assembly Room. (The snow date will be Wednesday, Feb. 12.)

The Family Health Center will conduct workshops in both English and Spanish for community members and students to show the many various programs that citizens and non-citizens are eligible to participate in to receive healthcare, for adults and children.

For more information, please call the Family Health Center of Newburgh. The phone numbers to call for more information in English: 563-8069. In Spanish: 563-8027 or 563-8071.

(Coincidentally, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is sponsoring a weeklong media blitz to expose the plight of the over 4.1 million uninsured people in America from March 10-16, 2003. That web site is available at http://coveringtheuninsured.org/ The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation)
