MIDDLETOWN Multiple piercings, body art and Siouxsie and The Banshees CDs may not seem typical of your average honor student, but Elaine Torda isnt your typical Honors Program coordinator, which may explain why Orange County Community Colleges Honors Program graduated record numbers last spring, has a record number of accepted students this fall, and why its newest cross-disciplinary seminar: From Gothic to Goth had to add an extra section to accommodate student interest.
The one-credit seminar, which runs once a week for fifteen weeks, is available to Honors Program students and on a limited basis to other high achieving students with permission of Torda, the instructor. It will cover art, music, literature, history, architecture and philosophy of the Gothic time period and how it relates to the modern Goth sensibility and lifestyle.
The seminar, which employs the Socratic method, will allow the students enormous freedom to come up with their own discoveries and definitions, within the framework of Tordas planning.
Im going to let them decide for themselves, says Torda, who says one of the hallmarks of the Honors Program is not only that the students receive a lot of individual attention, but also that they have a lot of input into the learning process. They like that they get to participate so fully, says Torda.
What Torda and other Honors faculty like about teaching the courses and seminars is that the students are so interested and so bright that often an instructor runs through a lesson plan ahead of schedule, and must work harder to come up with more and more challenging material.
Due to the wide range of subject matter, seminars are often team-taught or incorporate guest lecturers in specific fields. Torda is working with several faculty experts in From Gothic to Goth, including art professor Susan Slater-Tanner, who will take the class to the Cloisters in Manhattan, a gothic-era museum.
Four additional honors program courses will also be offered this semester.
History of Rock and Roll, English 101, are favorites while International Relations
and Introduction to Mythology are the other new, much anticipated, additions
to the honors lineup. The spring semester will provide even more new course
options and seminar topics in math, business and physical education.
