PBIE MEETING OF 9/30/10 MEMBERS PRESENT: Michelle Tubbs, Ilene Castaldo, Kathy Zurilla, Cory Harris, Josephine Vondras, Roslyn Smith, Mindy Ross, Debbie Horowitz, Abdel Farah, Amanda Stieble, Deb Merrill. Minutes from 9/23 accepted, no discussion. All in favor, K. Zurilla abstension. Michelle sent out PIP Feedback Survey. Deadline of next Thursday established to get back survey. Michelle discussed with Rich need to assemble a group to address concerns about PIP system use and planning problems. Roz was in agreement not to include the campus personnel initiative as part of PBIE’s assessments. Security equipment needs clarified as call towers and cameras are the same as last year’s initiatives. The additional components are the radios and vehicle. Need to have a status update on whether or not the approved initiatives were or were not funded, and/or what parts of them were/were not funded. PBIE INITIATIVES #11- Systematic update of computer labs and software in Harriman…- When was the last time these labs were updated? Accreditation needed for business courses? What other courses are held in these rooms? What are the specifics of the update? Exactly what equipment and software, etc. Is there a master plan to update equipment? It is more important to update non-smart classrooms with initial equipment before updating existing. #12- Highly Available (HA) IT Environment- Clarified by Roz- It is the need for a backup system most likely housed in Newburgh in the tower building. Supports both campuses. Single sign on created this need. Mainly to maintain communications through the internet like email, angel, banner in the event of a power outage. It becomes critical for phone communication also. It enables the interplay between Newburgh and Middletown. If Middletown went out, we could use Newburgh’s system and vice versa. #13 Fitness Center Enhancements- At the Newburgh campus. Mindy states we have old equipment for Newburgh. The curriculum could be expanded if new equipment could be purchased. This will enhance the older equipment. #14 Health Studies Major- This looks like it is currently being worked on. It is an option for the students who don’t make it through our current programs. It can be transferred to lead to a Public Health degree. An articulation agreement with Albany is possible. (Is this the same as the Public Health program ?). Do we have individuals qualified to teach the required courses now or do we have to hire new faculty? Is it an AA or AS? #15 Laboratory Technical Assistant, Kaplan- To support the mainly the sciences, but also other disciplines using the computer labs in Newburgh. Is this is a personnel request? It can still come through the PIP system if it is for a new program/venture/building it might be legitimate to come through PBIE. #16 Creation of developmentally appropriate Education Hands-on learning Lab in Newburgh- We did approve similar initiatives for Middletown. Timeline long- complete until 8/2012. What is the current education major student population now and what do you foresee for the future? #17 BMST combined- furniture replacement program- What about the other departments? Most of this area’s classes are taught in the same classrooms. Other divisions will be housed in the new building, so would it be a waste of resources to update now? Those classrooms though will still be in use after the move, or furniture could be moved into new building with them. Wasn’t a recommendation of last Prioritization Cycle to create furniture replacement plans…should this type of updating come through PBIE? #18 Botanical Center Classroom/Lab equipment- microscope, culture hoods, and computers.- Greenhouse building is being rebid now and planned to take place summer 2011. There is some grant money for this initiative. May not have to use the operating budget to fund. #19 Purchase of modern lab. Tech. equipment to support the Medical Lab Tech program- It seems it is necessary to keep certification of program for it to continue. Is this all the equipment they need or will we see similar request in the next few years? #20 Smartroom/Computer Lab Writing Classroom. - The classroom currently has not enough (not sure of number) computer stations now. Is there another current lab on campus? Most of them are used for the business dept. There is no central computer the instructor can use to teach. Students have to double up on computers. Other depts. may be able to request to use it. The students need to know how to use the software programs to create the required formats. The business dept. does teach some of this in one of their computer courses. Can the library’s room be used for this…expansion of computers and instructing technology for this room was approved last cycle and should be added this year. Is scheduling for that one room difficult? Can this room be utilized ? Is it enough for the whole English dept.? Respectfully Submitted, Ilene Castaldo Approved 10/7/10
