Through OEP, SUNY Orange partners with other academic institutions and community groups to offer a variety of educational opportunities to county residents. Among OEP’s ongoing programs are the Community College in the High School Program (CCHSP), the Center for Youth Development (CYD), Career Pathways in Tech Prep (CPTP) and the SMART Summer Program. OEP also oversees SUNY Orange’s faculty/teacher collaborations, articulation agreements and the colleges’ satellite centers. Community College in the High School Program: Stipend Program Launched CCHSP will award a stipend of $250 per course section to all high school teachers offering CCHSP courses in the Spring 2009 semester. Additionally, a $150 stipend will be awarded to the CCHSP liaison at each participating high school. “Our instructors and liaisons do a great job, and we want to acknowledge the extra work they do – attending meetings, screening students, and working with our academic departments - to effectively manage our SUNY Orange courses,” says CCHSP Coordinator Mary Ford. Scholarships for CCHSP Students CCHSP has instituted a scholarship program. SUNY Orange will award scholarships to two students at each participating high school for the Spring 2009 semester. The scholarships will cover half the tuition for one CCHSP course. Awards will be based on academic merit and financial need. “We don’t want financial problems to stand in the way of high-achieving students participating in CCHSP,” says SUNY Orange President Bill Richards, who spoke to CCHSP instructors at a meeting at the college. Program Grows 13% in 2008 Enrollment in CCHSP grew 13% in 2008 compared to 2007. A total of 842 students in fifteen high schools participated in the program in the Fall 2008 semester. SUNY Orange’s overall enrollment increased 2.4 percent in the same period, bringing the total number of students at the college to 6,763. There are 3,653 full-time students at SUNY Orange, an increase of 5.8 percent over last year. Faculty Collaborations: CFP to Add New Members The Collaborative Faculty Partnerships (CFP) brings together Orange County high school and college faculty to improve students’ academic achievement at both the secondary and post-secondary level. Currently, the new project will focus on ways to align high school curricula and teaching strategies with the goal of reducing the number of students requiring remediation in English and Math in freshman year of college. Participants will receive a $700 stipend for their participation and services. For more information about CFP or to join, please visit http://www.sunyorange.edu/oep/pp/fac/cfp.shtml Thank you to those educators who were part of CFP in 2008: Terri Campbell (Valley Central HS), Deborah Hewitt (Chester Academy), Roger Kalin (Goshen HS), Bridget Lang (James O’Neill HS), Lisa Livingston (Cornwall HS), Marion Loiola (SUNY Orange), Nancy Maguire (SUNY Orange), RoseMarie Mastrocola (SUNY Orange), Robin Markovits (Chester Academy), Cynthia McKay (Orange-Ulster BOCES), Alison Miller (Orange-Ulster BOCES), Michele Paradies (SUNY Orange), Edward Sucich (Minisink Valley HS), Michele Thompson (Chester Academy), Alicia Voss (Valley Central HS), Elaine Votraw (Minisink Valley HS), and Heidi Weber (SUNY Orange). SUNY Buffalo, Syracuse University, Pace University and SUNY Cortland were among the colleges visited by the group. “We visited urban and rural campuses, large and small schools, and private and public institutions,” says Ramona Burton, LPP Director. “We want the students to see the range of opportunities available to them.” The Liberty Partnerships Program offers in-school services, after-school programs and an extensive variety of educational opportunities to students in the Newburgh area. SMART Summer Program: 2007 and 2008 Programs Earn Raves from Parents The Sensory-Motor Activities & Recreational Transition (SMART) Summer Program received rave reviews from parents whose children have participated in the program. “Extremely helpful for parents. Enjoyable for the children,” wrote one parent in her evaluation. “I thank you for all that you have done for my child. The confidence you gave him is priceless!” wrote another. “I was especially impressed with the different soothing techniques that we were shown in dealing with my child’s anxiety, as well as the techniques for redirecting a child who struggles with focusing on tasks,” wrote a third. The program is jointly offered by OEP & SUNY Orange’s Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Department for children in grades pre-K to 6th grade. SMART classes are taught by certified Occupational Therapists and focus on gross and fine motor skills and sensory-motor integration. Click on links for 2009 brochure & application.
