Their presentation, “Across the Great Divide: Collaborating With Secondary Schools to Reduce the Need for College-Level Remediation,” chronicled how SUNY Orange established the Office of Educational Partnerships and how the office has enabled the college to forge relationships between college- and secondary-level educators. OEP Extends Early Assessment Project In the 2010-2011 academic year, OEP continued to work on the College’s Early Assessment Project, an initiative launched by former OEP Director Rosana Reyes-Rosello to reduce the number of freshman placing into remedial writing at SUNY Orange. This year high school juniors at both Chester Academy and Newburgh Free Academy took practice writing placement exams, which were evaluated by SUNY Orange English department faculty. OEP Director Mary Ford, Associate Vice President for Liberal Arts Mary Warrener, Associate Professor Alex Jakubowski and Professor Diane Bliss have met with students, teachers and administrators at the schools to share information about the college’s writing assessment and the rubric used to evaluate assessment essays. Community College in the High School Program: Cornwall High School Joins CCHSP Cornwall Central High School offered its first CCHSP course in the Fall 2010 semester. Math teacher Mike Flannery taught two sections of College Algebra (MAT121). Flannery, who is one of only 1,131 nationally certified teachers (National Board for Professional Teaching Standards) in New York State, said that his more advanced classes have always covered college-level subjects, and that this year he was pleased to be able to offer these students an opportunity to receive college credit for their work. Cornwall is one of 14 schools in Orange County to offer CCHSP courses, and a total of 968 students participated in the program in the Fall 2010 semester.
