ENCORE TO OFFER SENIOR LEARNERS 21 COURSES THIS FALL

Program for Seniors Learners Includes 21 Available Classes

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- Encore, the SUNY Orange program for senior learners in the Hudson Valley, announces 21 available classes that will be offered this Fall, covering such topics as history, literature, investing, religion, outdoor activities, movies, fitness and relaxation. Courses meet at varying days and times throughout September, October and November.

Encore, a lifelong learning program established for residents ages 50 and older at SUNY Orange, supports a variety of high-interest courses, most of which are generally short-run offerings (comprised of one to four class meetings) and held on the College’s Middletown campus. The first class begins Sept. 4.

Courses planned for the Fall include: “Mah Jongg,” “The Essence of T’ai Chi,” “Investments: How to Choose the Right One for You,” “Wives of the Civil War Officers,” “Got Sleep,” “Meet the Winemaker: Grapes and Wines of the East,” “The Ghost Dance: Tragedy at Wounded Knee,” “Beginning and Intermediate Color Pencil Drawing,” “Hiking,” “Scottish Highlands and Islands: Birding, Hiking and Sights,” “1968,” “Book Club,” “Ancient America,” “The Beatles: The Making of the White Album,” “Art and Discussion of Style,” “Beginning/Continuing Yoga,” “Bridge: Supervised Bridge at the Intermediate Level,” “Basic Automotive Maintenance,” “Films for Everyone,” “History of Substance Abuse in Orange County,” and “Evangelical Epistomology II.”

Classes are taught by topical experts who have a professional background in the subject or have spent many years studying and/or teaching the topic. They are professors, professors emeriti, lawyers, businessmen, artists, musicians, bridge masters, and specialists in the various modes of spiritual and physical well-being. Class sizes are determined by available facilities, course content (lecture/hands-on) and effective learning strategy requirements.

Prospective participants in the two-session hiking class should be prepared and able to walk for at least two hours on sometimes rocky terrain. The “Book Club” class will discuss “On the Move, An Autobiography” by Oliver Sachs and “The Plot Against America” novel by Philip Roth. The five-session “Films for Everyone” Course will examine “Adam’s Rib,” “The Apartment,” “What’s Up Doc?,”9 to 5” and “Tootsie.”

The “Art and Discussion of Style” class will meet for both of its sessions at the Upfront Studio, 31 Jersey Avenue, Port Jervis.

Membership in Encore is required in order to register for the upcoming courses, and membership must be paid for registration for classes will be accepted.
