“Poetry on the Green” Event April 20 Culminates Series of Readings on Both Campuses

PHOTO: Poetry on the GreenMIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- In celebration of National Poetry Month in April, the SUNY Orange English Department will host a series of poetry readings on each of the College’s campuses throughout the month, along with a “Poetry on the Green” event set for Wednesday, April 20.

This will mark the fifth successive year that the College has hosted Poetry on the Green, an outdoor poetry reading marathon that will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Middletown campus Alumni Green. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors to the Gerry Forum in the Rowley Center for Science and Engineering.

Other events planned for the Middletown campus include a pair of faculty readings from 11 a.m. to Noon on Tuesday, April 5 and Thursday, April 14. The April 5 event will be held in the Morrison Hall Music Room and will feature poets Anne Sandor, Mary Makofske, Deborah Chedister, and Diane Bliss. Amanda Crowell and Alex Jakubowski will conduct the April 14 reading, slated for the Gilman Center for International Education in the College Library.

A Middletown campus Poetry Slam is on tap from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 15 in the Gilman Center, with an open mic between rounds. Competitors should arrive by 6 p.m. sharp.

In Newburgh, a Poetry Marathon is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, with a Poetry Slam scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 1 (competitors should arrive at 5 p.m. sharp). Each of the events on the Newburgh campus will take place in the Orange Country Trust Company Great Room located in Kaplan Hall.
