The Chancellor’s Award for adjunct teaching recognizes consistently superior teaching at the graduate, undergraduate, or professional level by part-time professors.

“Adjunct faculty are a critical component as SUNY seeks to ensure access, completion, and success for all students, and those honored with this year’s award are the best of the best,” Zimpher said as she announced the awards. “Congratulations to all of the faculty receiving this award, which recognizes continued excellence in providing SUNY students with effective, motivational instruction that prepares them for success in college and career.”

Guertin has taught a variety of introductory and upper-level courses, including Business Law, Introduction to Business, Principles of Management, and Entrepreneurship courses. He also teaches online classes in Business Law I and Business Law II.

“Rich has been teaching Business Law for many years, and he brings a wealth of real-world experience into the classroom,” said Suzanne Krissler, chair of the Business Department. “Despite his busy schedule, Rich always maintains regular office hours and is there for his students. His students consistently rave about his teaching style and effectiveness. His real-world examples captivate his students and his subject knowledge is second to none.”

Guertin joined the SUNY Orange faculty as an adjunct instructor in November 2006, served as a full-time temporary faculty member in Spring 2007, and returned to his adjunct instructor role in Fall 2007. He was promoted to adjunct assistant professor in 2010. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Hamilton College and a Juris Doctor degree from New York University.

In addition to teaching at the College, Guertin is a practicing lawyer and former City Court judge. He is the Corporation Counsel for the City of Middletown, holds membership on the Board of Directors of the Hudson Heritage Federal Credit Union in Middletown, and serves as Lector and Hour Captain of the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel at the St. Joseph’s Church in Middletown.

He has also reviewed and contributed to McGraw-Hill textbooks, and has edited online student study guides for the book company.
