Program has Served More Than 350 Customers Since 2010 with a 90 Percent Success Rate

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- Since 2010, SUNY Orange’s Job Search Networking Group has served more than 350 job seekers through referrals from the Orange County One Stop Career Centers in Middletown and Newburgh, with 90 percent of participants returning to the workforce, many at salaries equal to or higher than what they earned previously.

For most job seekers, the job hunt is no picnic as disappointment, rejection, and desperation seem to have become hallmarks of the typical job search. Many of those participating in the Job Search Networking Group, offered by the College’s Continuing and Professional Education department, are older, higher-level, downsized corporate workers who face significant challenges in finding a position.

Workforce development research has shown that an attitude focused on learning—known as a learning goal orientation (LGO)— assists job seekers in dealing with rejection and stress in ways that actually help them accomplish their goals. Rather than standard employment training techniques, the group’s facilitator, Jay Lang, provides training that allows participants to develop a learning-goal orientation.

This style of training helps job seekers view the search as something that can serve as a learning tool. This, in turn, allows them to better manage stress, and results in high rates of reemployment. Many who utilize the Job Search Networking Group gain renewed hope of finding a corporate position again, according to Lou DeFeo, CAPE’s workforce development education coordinator.

Participants from the Job Search Networking Group who obtained gainful employment during the fourth quarter of 2015 averaged 54 years of age, had been unemployed for an average of 7 3/4 months, and returned to work at an average salary of $79,000.

In addition to weekly meetings and other services offered by CAPE, participants receive access to resources and services in a professional business environment thanks to the One Stop Career Centers located at 33 Fulton Street in Middletown and 3 Washington Center in Newburgh.
