Collaboration with Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners Leads to Availability of Three Classes

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- SUNY Orange and the Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County Master Gardeners are collaborating to offer a series of gardening-related programs this fall at the Devitt Center for Botany and Horticulture located on the College’s Middletown campus.

Hudson Valley gardening enthusiasts can enjoy a two-session Garden Photography course in September, along with single-session Flower Pressing/Preserving and Botanical Drawing programs in October and November, respectively. All courses, to be held at the Devitt Center, are open to the general public and will be taught by a Cornell Cooperative Extension master gardener.

Course information is as follows:

Garden Photography – 2 sessions (Saturdays, Sept. 19 and 26, 9 a.m. to Noon)
Capture vistas and individual elements of your garden, creatively using colors and textures. Shoot from all angles, experiment with backgrounds. No photography or computer experience required. Instructor will lead discussion and evaluation of photos volunteered by participants. Participants must have a digital camera and computer cable. (registration: $39)

Flower Pressing/Preserving – 1 session (Monday, Oct. 5, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.)
Selecting, picking, conditioning, sectioning and artistic effects, pressing methods. (registration: $25)

Botanical Drawing – 1 session (Monday, Nov. 2, 9 a.m. to Noon)
Depict the form, color, and details of plant species. No artistic ability required. (registration: $25)

The Devitt Center for Botany and Horticulture, located adjacent to Horton Hall on the SUNY Orange Middletown campus, consists of two newly renovated greenhouses featuring a classroom/laboratory space in one and a home for the College’s extensive tropical plant collection in the other. The Center was made possible by a generous gift from the F.E. Devitt Family with additional support from Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther, the Middletown Garden Lovers and the Fusco Family.

The College also maintains additional gardens on campus, including an Educational Native Woodland Garden, a Xeriscape Garden, Rain Garden and the newly installed Devitt Center Wetland Garden.
