Global Studies Department to Sponsor Series of Faculty Speakers in Support of Global Initiative: Water

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Bard College professor and author Dr. James Romm will serve as the keynote speaker March 4 when SUNY Orange hosts a “History of Oceans” Day as part of its Global Initiative: Water programming.

Romm, the James H. Ottaway Jr. professor of classics and director of the Classical Studies program at Bard, specializes in Greek and Macedonian history, and last year published the book “Dying Every Day: Seneca at the Court of Nero.” His lecture at SUNY Orange will be entitled “The Concept of Ocean in Ancient Greek & Roman Culture” and will be given at 7 p.m., March 4 in the Sandra and Alan Gerry Forum of the Rowley Center for Science and Engineering at the College’s Middletown campus.

Romm’s lecture will cap an afternoon series of presentations on the world’s oceans by faculty members from SUNY Orange’s Global Studies Department. Afternoon lectures, to be held in the Gilman Center for International Education, include: “The Great Sea: the Mediterranean Between the Indian & Atlantic Oceans” from 1 to 2 p.m. by Demos Kontos; “After the Mediterranean: Continuity and Change in the Early Modern Atlantic from 2 to 3 p.m. by Michael McCoy; and “We Shall Fight on the Seas and Oceans” from 3 to 4 p.m. by Heidi Amelia-Anne Weber.

All lectures and presentations are open to the general public. Admission is free.

SUNY Orange’s Global Initiative is a College-wide interdisciplinary focus on a topic of global importance. Global Initiative seeks to expand students’ horizons, bring academic departments together in collaboration and infuse a global perspective on its curriculum. This year’s theme is water as the College embarks upon a yearlong celebration and exploration that addresses the global, human, scientific and environmental significance of our planet’s most precious resource.
