JOSEPH MARTELLARO NAMED NEW CONDUCTOR OF SYMPHONIC BAND
Longtime Highland High School Band Director Will Oversee College’s Symphonic Band
MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Longtime Highland High School band director Joseph Martellaro has been named the new conductor of the SUNY Orange Symphonic Band, the College has announced.
Martellaro, who recently retired following 27 years at Highland High School, will now direct a SUNY Orange band that is comprised of students and community members. He brings a diverse and rich musical background to the College.
While at Highland, he directed the concert band, wind ensemble and jazz band. Those ensembles performed three concerts per school year while also marching in the Memorial Day parade and supporting graduation ceremonies. Martellaro also offered instrumental instruction and served as the district’s music coordinator.
Martellaro is currently a Lt. Colonel with the 53rd Troop Command/Joint Forces Headquarters in the New York Army National Guard. He served in Iraq in 2007-08. He commanded the 199th Army Band (“The Governor’s Band”) from 1996 to 2005, averaging 40 performances annually while conducting both the concert band and ceremonial band. From 1987 to 1996, he commanded the 552nd Air Force Band from Stewart Air National Guard Base.
His resume also includes tenures as a music teacher and band director at Chappaqua Central School District (elementary school band) and Blind Brook-Rye Union Free School District (middle school band). He spent one year as a trumpet player in the 26th Army Band and two years as a trumpet player with the United States Military Academy Band.
A native of Auburn, N.Y., Martellaro earned a master’s degree from Western Connecticut State University, a bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College, and an associate’s degree from Onondaga Community College. He has also studied at the Army-Navy School of Music. He has performed with the Jimmy Sturr Band, Doug Feroney Big Band, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Don Cornell and the Temptations.
The SUNY Orange Symphonic Band welcomes participation from those who wish to be part of a community ensemble of musicians who desire to perform and/or enrich their musical talents. The band performs and rehearses at Middletown’s historic Paramount Theatre, and generally offers two to three concerts per year at the Paramount. The band has also performed at a variety of community locations throughout Orange County during the summer months.
The band’s music also graces the College’s annual Commencement ceremony and has been a part of other special events as well.
