ENCORE AT SUNY ORANGE ANNOUNCES 19 COURSES TO BE AVAILABLE IN THE FALL
Program for Senior Learners Offers Diverse Courses Covering Wide Range of Topics
MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Encore, the SUNY Orange program for senior learners in the Hudson Valley, announces 19 Fall classes that will be offered beginning in September, covering such topics as history, economics, literature, crafts and fitness. Registration for courses will begin in August and the first classes begin Sept. 8.
Encore, a lifelong learning program established for residents ages 50 and older at SUNY Orange, supports high-interest courses, most of which are generally short-run offerings (comprised of one to four class meetings) and held on the College’s Middletown campus.
Classes are taught by topical experts who have a professional background in the subject or have spent many years studying and/or teaching the topic. They are professors and professors emeriti, lawyers, businessmen, artists, musicians, bridge masters, and specialists in the various modes of spiritual and physical well-being. Class sizes are determined by available facilities, course content (lecture/hands-on) and effective learning strategy requirements.
Among the courses on tap for the Fall are: “Your Family Tree Begins with You,” “Petticoats to Prostitutes: Women in the Civil War,” “Aquasize,” “Chocolate, Another Contribution of the New World to Civilization,” “Layman’s Guide to ‘Krisnamurti’,” “Another Mystery Lady: Meet Vera Stanhope,” “Child Labor in Walden,” “What is Money & Why Should you Care about Monetary Policy?,” “Let’s Go to the Movies,” “Fiction and Nonfiction,” “Hiking: Basha Kill and Black Rock Forest,” “Mah Jongg,” “Heroes and Villains, Continued,” “Crafts for Fun,” “Made in Chester,” “Greece’s Parthenon,” “Bridge,” “Help! What are Facebook, Facetime, Skype, You Tube, Twitter All About?,” and “The Civil War.”
Membership in Encore is required in order to register for the upcoming courses, and membership must be paid for registration for classes will be accepted. Membership dues are $55 per year and Encore has openings available for the remainder of the 2014-15 academic year.
