The bell, forged in 1842 and weighing more than 500 pounds, resided in the steeple of the Newburgh Courthouse for more than a century until it was removed because of safety concerns sometime in the 1970s and placed in storage at the Orange County Historian’s Office in Goshen. Now, the bell hangs from a display apparatus handcrafted by Newburgh sculptor and artist Stuart Sachs.

On hand to offer remarks during the installation were Dr. William Richards, SUNY Orange president; Joan Wolfe, chair of the SUNY Orange Board of Trustees; Ed Diana, recently retired Orange County executive; Leigh Benton, Orange County legislator; and Mary McTamaney, City of Newburgh historian. Sachs and William Kaplan, whose Foundation generously supported Sachs’ crafting of the display, were also in attendance.

Benton was instrumental in facilitating the bell’s return to Newburgh.
