SUNY Orange Trustee Alex De La Rosa Discusses Degree Completion

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. –Today’s Completion Week testimonial video features Student Trustee Alex De La Rosa encouraging his fellow students to pledge to complete their degree.

“A degree means a lot more than people think it means today. Everyone goes around thinking it is ‘just an associate’s degree, just a piece of paper.’ But it is a lot more than that. It is a sense of accomplishment. And you have something that does prove that all of your dedication and hard work does pay off.”

Alex De La Rosa profile

New Windsor resident Alex De La Rosa officially began his one-year term as SUNY Orange’s student Trustee on Sept. 10 when he was sworn in by chairman Joan Wolfe during the College’s Board of Trustees meeting.

As the student Trustee, De La Rosa represents the College’s nearly 7,000 students at Board meetings and other special College events. A graduate of Newburgh Free Academy who is pursuing a degree in international studies, De La Rosa has been actively involved in student activities on SUNY Orange’s recently expanded Newburgh campus over the past year.

A 2012 graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, De La Rosa serves as president of the Newburgh campus Board of Activities, sits as a student representative on the College-wide Sustainability Committee and is a member of the Student Senate. He also is an active community volunteer, having donated time for a variety of events in support of Safe Harbors of the Hudson in Newburgh.

At NFA, he was an honors student and earned eight varsity letters (two each for baseball, wrestling and football, and one each for tennis and track).

De La Rosa’s one-year term will conclude at the Board’s June 2014 meeting.

More About Completion Week

Under the slogan of “Commit. Complete. Compete.” the 37 State University of New York (SUNY) and City University of New York (CUNY) community colleges have set aside this week (Sept. 30 to Oct. 4) to send a simple message: students who complete an associate’s degree have better prospects for jobs, scholarships and transfer to four-year schools.

For part of the week, staff and student volunteers will be manning “pledge tables” at various locations on both campuses during the week to spread the word about degree completion and to encourage students to pledge to finish their degree.  Printed pledge forms will be available at the tables, but pledges can also be completed online.

Pledge tables can be found at the following locations, dates and times the remainder of the week:

Middletown campus

Tuesday (Oct. 1): Shepard Ctr. Cafeteria lobby (10 a.m. to Noon)

Wednesday (Oct. 2): Bio-Tech Building Lobby (5 to 7 p.m.)

Newburgh campus

Tuesday (Oct. 1): Tower Building Lobby (5:30 to 7 p.m.)
