“Caring for the Older Adult with Cancer” and Review Course for Hospice & Palliative Care Certification on Tap

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- Nurses seeking to expand or enhance their care-giving skills will have two non-credit courses at their disposal this Fall as SUNY Orange will offer “Caring for the Older Adult with Cancer” and a review course for “Hospice and Palliative Care Certification” on the College’s Middletown campus.

The hospice and palliative care review course will be held during one eight-hour session, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 21 in Room 207 of Harriman Hall. This course will assist nurses in preparing for the certification exam, however taking this course does not guarantee a passing score on the CHPN exam. The course will follow the Core Curriculum for the Generalist Hospice and Palliative Nurse, with course outline, case studies and journal articles augmenting class content. Continuing education units (CEUs) are available from the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association for those students who complete the course. Cost is $85.

The “Caring for the Older Adult with Cancer” course covers medications, comorbities and other factors that affect treatment and care. This one-session class is appropriate for medical/surgical nurses as well as experienced oncology nurses. Continuing education units (CEUs) are available from the Oncology Nursing Society for those students who complete the course. Students will meet from 5 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16 in Room 358 of the Bio-Tech Building on the College’s Middletown campus.
