SUNY ORANGE SYMPHONIC BAND TO HELP CELEBRATE MIDDLETOWN'S 125TH ANNIVERSARY JUNE 23

6/12/2013

College Ensemble to be Joined by Middletown High School Wind Ensemble and Pair of Choral Groups

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – The SUNY Orange Symphonic Band will commence its Summer 2013 concert series with a celebratory program featuring works by Middletown-based composers and Tchaikovsky’s celebrated “1812 Overture” at 6 p.m., Sunday, June 23 at Middletown’s Festival Square, located on West Main Street across from City Hall.

The evening program, in celebration of the City of Middletown’s 125th anniversary, will showcase local musicians and vocalists. The band, under the direction of Kevin Scott, will be joined by members of the Middletown High School Wind Ensemble, and accompanied by members of the Middletown Concert Chorale and the Delaware Valley Choral Society of Milford, Pa.

Known for its rousing melodies and thunderous artillery sounds, Tchaikovsky’s symphonic poem was composed to celebrate Russia’s victory over the invading French army under Napoleon Bonaparte, yet in recent years the work has been programmed for other festive occasions.

Robert Gavin, director of the MHS Wind Ensemble, will guest conduct the combined wind bands in a performance of Harold Walters’ “Instant Concert” and with the high school ensemble in a performance of Samuel Hazo’s “Novo Lenio.”

The evening program will also feature four works by composers who either live or work in Middletown, including Bruce Hampshire’s “Fanfare and Processional”; Sterling Granger’s “Holiday’s End”; Joseph Bertolozzi’s “Trances and Visions,” with the band’s principal hornist Christine Sacchi as soloist; and the world premiere of “The Middletown Quasquicentennial March” by SUNY Orange assistant professor Dana Paul Perna.

The concert is sponsored by the City of Middletown in conjunction with the College’s Arts and Communication Department. Admission is free.
