SUNY Community Colleges to Collaborate on $14.6 Million Grant to Help Employers and Employees

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – SUNY Orange will join its sister State University of New York community colleges in a $14.6 million federal Trade Act grant designed to bolster the advanced manufacturing sector over the next three years by developing shared courses and programs that will enhance workers’ skills and provide employer support.

The project will serve more than 3,000 of New York’s Trade Act Eligible workers, as well as unemployed veterans. The statewide consortium of community colleges will build and offer uniform core and specialty curricula based on the U.S. Competency Model of Advanced Manufacturing and incorporating the NAM-Endorsed Manufacturing Skills Certification System.

Employers and employees alike will have access to a variety of courses that will be available online and via alternative delivery formats. Industry leaders will collaborate with the educational institutions to develop new curricula and enhance current courses. A statewide system of awarding academic credit for previous work experience or academic learning is to be created as well.

Because SUNY Orange does not currently have an advanced manufacturing curriculum, the College will support the statewide effort locally through continuing its Six Sigma and EntreSkills programming. Six Sigma aims to streamline business processes while EntreSkills is an interactive, web-based entrepreneurship program offered through the NYS Small Business Development Center.

The College will also have access to the programs and courses being developed throughout the state. Plans are in place for partner schools to create a one-year credit certificate in machinery and specialty technical certificates, for credit and non-credit, in plastics, welding, optics, photovoltaics, precision machine/CNC and semi-conductor/nanotechnology.
