SummerStar Theatre Ensemble to Offer Rodgers and Hammerstein Classics at Orange Hall Theatre

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- A fresh spin on the classic songs of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein will have audience members whistling show tunes for days following SummerStar Theatre’s six performances of “A Grand Night for Singing” this June at Orange Hall Theatre on the Middletown campus of SUNY Orange.

The second of three distinctly different offerings on the docket for SummerStar Theatre’s 13th season, “A Grand Night for Singing” will open its six-show run at 8 p.m., Friday, June 22. Additional evening performances will be at 8 p.m., June 23, 29 and 30. Sunday matinee performances will be held at 3 p.m. on June 24 and July 1.

The show explores love as only Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II could say it. This musical revue features the most striking and alluring arrangements heard for these songs in many years and includes songs from such classic Rodgers and Hammerstein shows as “Oklahoma,” “South Pacific,” “The Sound of Music,” “The King and I,” “Carousel” and many others. All 11 of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical collaborations are represented in this 1994 Broadway musical revue which earned two Tony Award nominations, including “best musical.”

“A Grand Night for Singing,” to be directed and choreographed by Shawn Schorno with Jim Quinlan providing musical direction, showcases the timeless and universal nature of Broadway's best known and most beloved songwriting team. The three-woman, two-man cast includes Dara Breitkopf, Samantha Gillespie, Laure Mantia, Michael Lancellotti and Steven Hoskins

Ticket prices are: $22, general admission; $16, senior citizens, faculty, staff and alumni; $14, students; and free for active duty military personnel. Group rates (10 or more) are available. For information, call (845) 341-4789. Tickets may be purchased online at www.summertartheatre.com.

In October, SummerStar Theatre will present a new contemporary one act musical “The Last Five Years” by Jason Robert Brown, which is an emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two 20-something New Yorkers who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The show’s unconventional structure consists of the woman telling her story backwards, while the man tells his story chronologically. The two characters only meet once, at their wedding in the middle of the show. Show times will be 8 p.m. for Friday and Saturday evening performances on Oct. 5-6 and 12-13, along with 3 p.m. Sunday performances on Oct. 7 and 14.

SummerStar Theatre is committed to bringing Broadway and off-Broadway plays to the Hudson Valley while utilizing the skills of community members in all facets of the production. Past performances of SummerStar Theatre include “Oliver!,” “Gross Indecency,” “Proof,” “Cabaret,” “Intimate Apparel,” “Over the River and Through The Woods,” “A Little Night Music,” “A New Brain,” “"Urinetown,” “The Fantasticks” and “Crazy For You.”
