Ceremony to Feature More than 400 Graduates

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – More than 400 graduates are expected to participate in SUNY Orange’s 62nd annual Commencement Ceremony, planned for 10 a.m., Saturday, May 19 on the Alumni Green of the College’s Middletown campus.

Mathematics professor Judith Schwartz and student Trustee Erica Cruz will serve as the featured speakers. In all, nearly 875 graduates have completed their associate’s degree or certificate requirements during August, December or May of this current academic year. That total is pending final review of all May graduate candidates’ transcripts.

Any student who completed the necessary academic requirements during the 2011-12 academic year, or is slated to conclude a program of study this summer, is eligible to participate in Commencement. This marks the second year in a row that the College will surpass 400 graduates participating in Commencement following last year’s record of 483.

College President Dr. William Richards will conduct the Commencement, with addresses to be delivered Schwartz, Cruz, Orange County Executive Edward Diana and Board of Trustees Chair Joan Wolfe.

SUNY Orange issues diplomas to students who earn Associate in Arts, Associate in Science and Associate in Applied Science degrees, as well as graduation certificates to those who complete the College’s various certificate programs.

Schwartz, chair of the College’s Math Department, is a recipient of the College’s 2012 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence. She has been on the faculty of SUNY Orange since 1980 and has taught a variety of mathematics courses throughout her tenure at the College.

Cruz, who was one of two students this spring who received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, was the student representative to the College’s Board of Trustees this past academic year. The New Windsor resident was also a student ambassador and was president of the Student Senate during the 2010-11 academic year. An engineering student, she has been on the Dean’s List during each of her semesters at the College and is also a member of the SUNY Orange chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for students at two-year colleges and institutions.

Commencement will begin with the graduate procession at 10 a.m. Music will be provided by the SUNY Orange Symphonic Band and the national anthem will be performed by the College’s Choir. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the Physical Education Building.
