Apprentice Players to Offer Two Performances in Orange Hall Theatre on April 14

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- Theatre goers, young and old, will discover that reading can be “flat out fun” when the Apprentice Players at SUNY Orange perform “The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley JR.” at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Saturday, April 14 in Orange Hall Theatre on the College’s Middletown campus.

The musical is based on the award-winning children’s book “Flat Stanley” written by Jeff Brown and illustrated by Scott Nash. “The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley JR.” (book by Timothy Allen McDonald, music and lyrics by Timothy Allen McDonald, David Weinstein, Jonathan K. Waller and Stephen Gabriel), tells the story of Stanley Lambchop, a normal, everyday, run-of-the-mill kid who dreams of doing something different, something amazing, something the world has never seen before.

While sleeping one night, the bulletin board on the wall above his bed comes loose and falls–right on top of Stanley! The next morning, Stanley wakes up flat. Not just flat ... really flat. Soon he realizes that if he has to be this way, at least he is going to make the best of it. He puts himself in a big envelope and travels the world–as a human letter. In a whirlwind musical travelogue, Stanley–the ultimate pen pal–is stamped, posted and cancelled from Los Angeles to Honolulu to Paris.

“This musical reminds each and every one of us to celebrate what makes us unique,“ states show director Terry Odell. The Apprentice Players will whisk the audience away on a musical adventure around the world. Show author Timothy Allen McDonald is quoted as having said, “In the musical, Flat Stanley learns that the real reward of doing amazing things is being able to share those experiences with someone.”

Odell will direct and choreograph the shows, with sets and costumes designed by Cabot Parsons, and lighting design by Peter Galipeau. The cast includes William Meagher, Billy Rittenhouse, Sarah Fields, Sal Polichetti, Tim Mullaley, Jordan Taylor and Joanne Lopez.

Ticket prices for “The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley JR.” are: $14, general admission; $6, children 12 and under. Theatre tickets may be purchased online. For more information, contact the Arts and Communication Department at (845) 341-4789.
