SUNY ORANGE MOURNS PASSING OF SARA "SIGGIE" MORRISON

1/18/2012

Below is the text of a note sent by Dr. William Richards, SUNY Orange president, to the faculty and staff today.

College community:

I am saddened to inform you that SUNY Orange lost a very near and dear friend during the holiday break. Sara “Siggie” Morrison, granddaughter of John and Christine Morrison, passed away on Dec. 29. She was 74. It was those same grandparents who donated to the State of New York the estate that would eventually become the core of the Middletown campus.

Sara, who played in and around the mansion and throughout her grandparents estate as a child, truly loved the College. She was a 1957 graduate and supported many College programs and scholarships over the years. When the College needed to replace the original leather on the mansion’s dining room walls, it was Sara who stepped forward with a donation to cover the costs.

Just recently, Sara donated her grandfather’s roll top desk to the College. Her only request was that the desk be on display in Mike Albright’s office in Morrison Hall, the same room that John Morrison used as his primary office when he owned the home. These are just a few of the many ways in which she demonstrated her affection for SUNY Orange, its students and employees.

If you are so moved, you may make a donation in Sara’s memory to the SUNY Orange Foundation. Gifts can be directed to support the general fund or the Holiday Open House, which Siggie regularly attended. She took much pleasure in seeing her grandparents’ home decorated for the holidays and on display for visitors to enjoy.

She will be missed.

Bill
