SUNDAY'S GEORGE SHEPARD MEMORIAL EVENT POSTPONED

8/25/2011

Forecast of Inclement Weather from Hurricane Irene Forces Cancellation, New Date To Be Determined

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – With severe weather from Hurricane Irene expected to impact the Hudson Valley this weekend, organizers have postponed the George Shepard Memorial event that was scheduled for 2:15 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 28 in the Fireplace Lounge of the Shepard Student Center on SUNY Orange’s Middletown campus.

Shepard enjoyed a remarkable 32-year career as the College’s first, and only, dean of students. He joined the College in 1951 when it had fewer than 200 students and little in the way of student activities. For more than three decades, he left an indelible imprint on the College through his diverse talents and leadership on all College fronts.

Speakers at the memorial service were to include retired Congressman Ben Gilman; former adjunct instructor Nina Griffin; retired director of student services Tom Goetz; and Barbara Bedell, columnist for the Times Herald-Record.

The event will be rescheduled later this fall, but a new date has not yet been determined.
