SYMPHONIC BAND TO HOLD JULY 14 CONCERT IN KAPLAN HALL

Performance to be Held in Connection with Alumni Event Honoring Class of 2001 and Newburgh Area Graduates

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – SUNY Orange’s Symphonic Band will conduct its inaugural Kaplan Hall performance at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, July 14, on the College’s Newburgh campus, capping an evening alumni reception that will honor SUNY Orange’s Class of 2001 and Newburgh area graduates.

The musical slate will feature a selection of light classics and popular favorites. Among the featured works will be highlights from Lerner and Loewe’s “Gigi” arranged by C. Paul Hereford, “Shades of Blue,” a suite of favorite blues songs compiled and arranged by Ross Hastings, “A Glenn Miller Tribute” by Henry Gass, Leroy Anderson’s “Bugler’s Holiday,” Edward J. Madden’s “Flutes, Flutes, Flutes”, Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” and a pair of marches entitled “Manhattan Beach” and “El Capitan” by John Philip Sousa.

A special highlight for the concert will be Carlos Chavez’s exotic “Toccata for Percussion Ensemble” performed by the members of the band’s percussion section.

The alumni reception will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Kaplan Hall and is open to all alumni. Those interested in attending should RSVP no later than July 8 to Mary Roth, alumni relations coordinator, at (845) 341-4179 or via email at mary.roth@sunyorange.edu.

The band, under the direction of Kevin Scott, is comprised of SUNY Orange students and members of the community. The concert is jointly sponsored by the College’s Arts and Communications and Alumni Relations departments. Admission is free and open to the general public. Kaplan Hall is located at the intersection of Grand and First streets in Newburgh, and is universally accessible. Access to the underground parking garage can be gained via First Street.
